TOPIC: Richmond, clearances and stoppages

An interesting article that is playing out in tonight’s game. Richmond are happy to concede the stoppage contest in order to win the next contest (e.g. Rioli has been used as a forward ruck tonight). Ruck contests may be well and truly overrated.

Richmond are taking the ultimate approach to the mantra of not getting sucked into the ball carrier. What they are effectively saying, you can will the ball at the stoppage but we will have all your outlets covered. We will not send three players in to tackle you, thereby giving you an outlet. Smart footy. Taking the Clarkson mantra to the next warp factor.

Mean while back at the Dockers, we preach more effort.

I noticed that for large parts of the Tigers v Hawks game Hawthorn had no forwards.

And we’re talking forwards who have got at least 12 premiership medals collectively who have played a truckload of games together and know a little bit about their playing system oh and coached by a master tactician ( though that was highly disputed in his press conference last night)

Baaaaahhh.....read Clarkos post match. It’s all about effort to execute a systems based approach....sound familiar?

No ruck you say....I’d be interested to see how the Dees and Pies went without Gawn and Reg Grundy.

Richmond won that game by a supreme amount of effort applying the systems based approach they are geared up for.....very similar to us in 2013. The wet conditions help kill the Hawks and I think they made a blue playing two ruckmen.

Lyon is training up our young team to do the same exceptional effort with pressure...it takes time.

It would've saved a lot of time if he just kept doing it since 2013.

Those teams have systems to move the footy forwards and we don't. They known what to do with the footy and everyone else knows where to go and has the backing to do it.

On the other hand, we have little to no plan going forward and end up kicking across the backline before turning it over or going long to an outnumbered contest. It's been the same problem we've always had with no solution coming except to win the first stoppage while we have forwards ahead of the footy to make a contest.

Having no one forward of the footy is a symptom of poor transition which has always been the case under RL and I'd wager always will be the case.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Yeah, Noddy, we all read what Clarko said about systems based approaches but I have to say that cherry picking one thing that suits your argument while ignoring the rest, doesn't carry much weight.

Clarko also focuses very much on skills development and maintenance. The Roly supporters on here constantly dismiss the need to skills because Roly values effort over skills.

So its all very well to say that Roly has a systems based approach but if you don't have the rest of what Clarko does, you're not going to get the same results. I think most on here would be happy to have a systems based approach with the requisite skills to make it work well but then again, you're going to have to get Roly to change to do that.

You might have to get him to change his structures as well. Having a system with most of the team behind the ball isn't going to suddenly increase your scoring ability because you are using a system. It requires just a bit more than that.

I noticed that too Flag, I also noticed that Hawthorn lost. Coincidence? I think not, given the evidence we have provided for the last 3 years.

Its about not having the personnel. Richmond are happy to kick to a contest, because they know that if they put it to their players advantage, chances are pretty good they'll win it, or at least force a stoppage. We don't have enough players who you can trust in that situation. You'd back Fyfe, Mundy, Neale, Hamling, Pearce, S Hill, Wilson, Blakely and (even though he's gone) Johnson to win the ball or break even. There's a next tier where its not too much of a risk. And then you are into Crowden, Giro, Grey, Matera, Sheridan, Hughes, Sutcliffe, and unfortunately Ballas who need pretty good delivery if they are to break even. You'd back Tabs and Cox to win it in the air, but not if it goes to ground.
Unless they run like B Hill, you can't afford a player who doesn't have much of a chance in a one on one contest.
Want to play like Richmond? Get more strength and experience into the young guys. And only time does that.

You have over half the side winning it 1 on 1, then 8 who you say can't, plus Tabs and Cox who can only win it in the air, to that I would add, if Tabs and Cox don't win it in the air they mostly get it to ground to our advantage, plus they both have pretty good skills below their knees. I would add Darcy, Ryan, Cerra, Banfield and Bennell to that list, which puts us up there. The problem we have at the moment is we don't have these players leading to where the ball can be put to their advantage. Change that and we are contenders.

We have a system Richmond have system.

Richmond are capable of executing theirs.

Our system needs to be simpler.

Please. A simpler system. Right that takes exactly how long to implement. We’ve got in the last 2 years nearly 22 new blokes on our list. Yeah, so we went a different direction like bottoming out before we started the build. Chris Scott, who smacked us by 133 points had to get Danger, Ablett, Touhy, Henderson since the glory days of 2011 and they still can’t crack it. Their system is 8 years into the build with a couple of champions to try and simplify the system. Melb will beat them tonight with a system of drafting well, teach them defence first then the idea of scoring better. Our system, given the experience of our side and the maturity requires more that just leading into the right spots. If you’ve been in an AFL system, you’d probably know about that right?
