Agree Morgan. The decision to turn us into West Coast Lite was an appalling one. We have a team in WA that appeals to smug, conservative, flat track bullies. All we need to do is stand for something else. And occasionally beat the mob up the road.
I honestly think that our marketing people said, "Oh look, West Coast are successful, lets be like them". Watched a documentary about Concorde last night. They were losing money hand over fist and the marketing people wanted to make the flights cheaper. But smart people realised that making the flights truly unaffordable for ordinary people meant that flying Concorde became a huge status symbol. They increased the price, and profits soared.
So maybe Freo, instead of worrying about being a bit different, should have increased the difference, so that not only do we get the people in Perth who like a bit of novelty and pizazz, but those people all over Australia would go for us.
But don't tell our marketing people the Concorde story - they'll think it means they need to increase the cost of membership.
