TOPIC: Lynch to Tigers

Adelaide/Fremantle/West Coast all played off in grand finals correct me if I am wrong no big name free agents.
Dangerfield/Frawley/Lynch/Dalhaus/Franklin all going to successful clubs. I am sure this isn’t what was intended from free agency successful clubs getting a free swing at struggling clubs talent without having to dip into their own draft picks, allowing the other clubs to subsidise their ongoing success. We essentially subsidise Gold Coasts compensation pick by slipping to 6.
Carlisle would appear an anomaly as one of the sought after free agents that went to a less successful club, but still Victoria.
It is looking to me that a few strong Victorian clubs are pretty much able to manipulate player movement gaining a very advantageous position.
Sydney without the additional salary cap space may now find this a little more difficult to achieve and wouldn’t be able to pull off the Buddy deal again.

Rufus how about if a top four club attracts a free agent, not only does the club losing the player receive compensation in the round deemed to be appropriate but the team getting the player loses their pick in that round.
In the Lynch case Gold Coast would receive pick 3 and should Richmond win the premiership they would give up pick 18(perhaps to Gold Coast).
This still allows the player to move, Richmond still receive a player at highly discounted price, Gold Coast get closer to the appropriate compensation for their player. This may also work in achieving equalisation if this is what the AFL is hoping for. I personally agree with equalisation.

Just seems to me the clubs that don't have their act together are doing all the complaining.

I am sure that is part of it Hypen but currently this system is making it harder for these clubs to get their act together and easier for the other clubs to keep it together.
We could always go back to the old system of biggest payroll wins. That way we could save up and have a crack at it every 5 years or so. The draft was introduced to prevent the haves and have nots currently free agency is bypassing this.
I am pretty sure it was some successful clubs that were the biggest complainers about tanking and priority picks when this was disadvantaging them.
We tried pretty hard during our period of being a very competitive outfit to attract free agents and struggled. Why?

DBTS - because players were worried that it was - as it turned out to be - a flash in the pan. You don't want to go to a club chasing success and then suddenly find yourself in the bottom 6 for 4 years in a row. And the last thing you want is to go to a club like ours as a highly paid senior player, miss the finals, then find yourself in the middle of Logan's Run style 5 year rebuilding purge.

So we need to put in a bank of good years - like 10 out of the next 12 in the 8 - to build faith in our club as a destination.

You go to Hawthorn and you know that f you can stay in the side you'll almost certainly be playing finals, and if there is a bad year, then it is just that - a bad year, then business as usual.

Even if we were in Melbourne, we'd struggle to attract players.

An extension to that DBTS, as well as getting a comp pick they also receive the winning clubs pick for that round as well. I'm sure then clubs will think twice, maybe.

Heres the thing, you can say that the weaker clubs are the ones doing all the complaining and thats probably true.
The question you`ve got to ask is if you want equalisation or not. Not every one is for equalisation, some would prefer to thrive or die based purely on merit.

My Dad used to take me to the WAFL ever since I could remember. 1977 and 1978 Grand Finals with the Perth Demons vs the Royals I can still remember. Bosustow in the rain almost pulling it off. Thats the last time we played finals. Now Im a Docker since 1995. Some blokes can sure pick em. Now I dont go to the WAFL that is, I mean how much patience can someone have. There is no hope. Its so stacked for Subi I just dont enjoy it.

Ive got a bad feeling that the Dockers could be another Perth Demons and I could go an entire lifetime, under the current arrangements and not see them win a flag. I think there are some Gold Coast supporters, Saints supporters who could feel the same way. We can point out all the ways we`ve contributed to our own situation but the travel makes it hard for us to compete on an even template with the Melbourne based clubs when it comes to free agency.
It wasnt really acceptable for the Swans to go so many years without a flag/chance. Then the Bulldogs. I would like to see the inevitable cycles in footy sped up. Instead of rebuilding for 6 years it should be 3. That doesnt mean we would be guaranteed anything, the better run clubs would always beat in the end the rabble.

The easiest way to do this is with the draft to exclude the top 8 in the first round and to curtail free agency. A club who spent 3 years at the bottom of the ladder would effectively have 6 draft picks between 1 and 20. If you couldnt lift yourself back into contention after that then so be it.

This is supposed to be entertainment. I dont mind if we suck as long as there is hope. Take that away and you get the disillusionment and joylessness that is becoming apparent with (some of) our supporter base.

Can somebody please shed some light for me on why for crying out loud don’t Gold Coast match the offer and force a trade. Surely this would result in two first round picks.
When I posted my original post I thought that he must of been unrestricted. Just read on AFL site that if they matched offer then Richmond would be forced to trade. This would then have Richmond in a position to have to move on some of its quality playing group to secure the picks. I am sure this would upset the unity they are currently have at the club and give them second thoughts on pursuing Lynch.
Perhaps these lowly clubs are rolling over to easily and part of their strategy should be to force this type of difficulty onto the better clubs.
I wonder if there isn’t some sort of behind the scenes directive from the AFL/Player association to be cooperative around player movement. This may also delisting players early allowing more chance of being picked up than if clubs were forced to wait and trade for them.
I just can’t see a logical reason why Gold Coast wouldn’t do this.
Genuinely interested in people’s views. Trying to generate some discussion on here that isn’t about the worth of Lyon or said admin staffer.

dbts,

There are several possible reasons for GCS not matching the offer:

i. Not wanting to have a disgruntled player poisoning the rest of the playing group
ii. pressure from AFL House (possibly to avoid restraint off trade legal action which is something they've been worried about for years)
iii. Pressure from AFLPA for the same reason as ii.
iv. Poor management

I have no idea if any of those reasons might be the explanation but I'd suggest that i. would be the most likely. Personally, I wouldn't rule any of them out at this stage.

I don't know about AFL conspiracies and mythological legal issues but with all those young players and high draft picks they've had, it would be reasonable to think their TPP books are bit restrictive.

Quite possibly, Shane but they've been losing blokes for a while and the TPP ceiling has been getting raised. Unless they were back loading a lot of contracts, you would tend to think that they've gained a little wiggle room in their salary cap.

Mind you, they could have over reacted to losing players and started increasing player payments across the board.

The problem with the compensation picks, is that if they are given at top ten in the draft, they penalise the next clubs, which are the clubs the draft is supposed to help. The compensation picks for Free Agency should come at the end of the first round, or at least after pick 8. The club who has let the player go has the opportunity to keep that player, so should not be overcompensated.

I would be grateful for any information about the order in which the process occurs. Lynch would be worth a bit, but I assume he would be accepting less than his market value to play for Richmond, and as I understand it the compensation awarded to the former club is based on the contract awarded by the destination club. Can Gold Coast work out (or be given) information about the compensation they will receive before deciding whether to match the offer and force a trade?

I realise this is all probably moot because it seems to be accepted that Gold Coast will wind up with picks 2 and 3 irrespective of where Lynch goes, but I feel like a true decision about whether or not to match an offer to a restricted free agent would require more solid information.

For what it is worth, I think free agency should involve the compensation coming from the draft picks (including future draft picks) of the destination club, determined by an independent arbitrator (in this case forcing Richmond, if they are the destination club, to provide three or four first and second round picks from this year and next to Gold Coast). As it stands, Richmond get Lynch and every other club compensates Gold Coast, which is absurd.
