Disagree. Get our young lads playing 50-100 games, I’ll back them in. You don’t get to where Richmond are without drafting well and FAs pick up. Like the track we’re on. Oh pretty sure we’re the last team to beat Richmond before they’re unbeaten run at the G, I think

We're about where Richmond was like five years ago. Right down to the eat your own rage of some supporters, sack the coach, sack the staff, forwards are useless, getting hammered by the media, etc, etc, etc. Fortunately for Richmond, the board stuck with the coach and allowed everyone to get on with the program. Fortunately for us, the board has a similar long term view.

Hardwick was appointed to the senior Richmond gig in 2009 on a 3 year deal and has had 2 year extensions to his contract since then. 5 years ago then, he was in the middle of a two year contract. Richmond's decision to renew his deal on 2 year extensions over the stretch appears to be a sound balance in sticking with the program while allowing room to exit should it not work out.

There's a stark difference right there. They've kept their coach on his toes in a competitive market while backing him in. I don't think there's any special comparison to be made between Freo and the Tigers, mate... anymore than there is with any other team. Some are doing better, some worse but all of them are doing it in their own way.

We could maybe get into their recruiting over the years and look into how they managed to build their current squad, as everyone seems keen to do with Hawthorn. That would be interesting enough... I'm not sure it'll do anything to dispel the impression among some of us that the whole 'rebuild' thing is another label from the spin machine though. Likewise, it won't improve the mood or increase optimism.

On the bright side though, it was good to see Hawthorn towelled up in a final.

GS, agree, but the big thing that changed at the Tigers was that the raised axe meant Hardwick had to accept that he needed to make changes. He did. If he had not he would have been gone before the Tigers even made the finals.

The similarity should be obvious to Blind Freddy. The supporters were baying for the coach's blood and trash talking their forward line. I can remember what everyone was saying about Jack Riewoldt.

I just don't get this end of history is now thing.
