As much as they try to balance out the draw with ladder position from the previous year in an uneven number of games it is impossible to get this right.
The fact that we play West Coast twice every year will always slant this number dependant in both sides relative strength.
At the beginning of the year both games looked very winnable.
We definitely played our part in shaping the top four.

It's also not that accurate to say someone had a difficult draw because they played teams in the top half of the ladder. That can only really work with the assumption that everything else is equal, particularly the abilities of all the teams.

I am of the very unpopular opinion that playing the Derby just once a year would really make it meaningful. I know this will never happen due to revenue, but what a game it would be. Imagine opposition supporters trying to get tickets, and the build up during the week would be awesome

Note that Collingwood had the easiest fixtures and made the eight. We could guess that they will disappear in straight sets in the finals. Note also that Hawthorn had the fourth hardest draw and finished in the top four making a Richmond - Hawthorn GF a distinct possibility. However a Richmond - Eagles GF would be slightly more likely. Then there is Melbourne - a reasonably hard draw...

I reckon we should have 4 derbys a year (with a decent coach) and play face breaking footy, literally and figuratively. But that's just me.

Given that we bought a game (GC), didn't freeze in Tassie or TonyAbbotsville, we had a very poor year. It had nothing to do with fixtures, six day breaks (hardly any) or time slots. We were equally hopeless to almost any opponent, top eight or not.

Except Carltoon - we were bloody magnificent playing them.

Awake, does that list mean we had the hardest draw of all clubs??

I find that remarkable, even taking into account 3 teams changed in and out of the top 8 this year (Adelaide, Port & Peptides for Hawks, Collonwood & Melbourne).

As for the ‘rebuilding’ Hawks - it’s pretty easy to bounce back when you can poach the best players from other teams (think Tom Mitchell, O’Meara, Henderson, Frawley) and not have to rely on the draft and the amount of time it takes to get the kids up to AFL standard. But so long as Richmond doesn’t go back to back I don’t care who wins (ok, I lie, not Weak Coast either).

You can't criticise the draw for being tough after the event. The draw is what it is when it's released. You look at it, speculate wildly, sell a shedload of ads and clicks based on that and then the season happens regardless.

Yes Jason that's right. Fremantle and Richmond had the toughest draws, Collingwood the easiest.. It was calculated at the start of this season, not long after the draw was released, and based on many factors including travel and relative finishing ladder positions.
