TOPIC: Sigh

Correct me if I’m wrong but before Sam Collins came to Freo, he was playing for the Box Hill Hawks under I’m sure the watchful eyes of Clarko. So if the guru himself waved goodbye to Sam before he came to Freo, then I think we got dudded in the first place. So not sure if he’s that highly sort after. More media hype.

It's a football report about a young guy doing well who is hoping to get and sounds like he deserves another chance at AFL level. Why the F is that media hype? just because Fremantle are mentioned? Haven't seen you calling anything about any other club hype. Wonder why?

You're starting to sound like Trump. Fake news next?

CA, him departing Freo is irrelevant. Recruiting managers and scouts would be all over him without the media giving it air. No doubt if he’s numbers are McGovern like, he’ll be on an AFL list but I would have thought the story was more about why aren’t AFL clubs not banging on the door to get Collins. It’s like the fake news that said young Hilly wanted out of Freo.

Yeah, it's not that big a story in isolation.

But doesn't it just fit so neatly into every other story that is the cluster that is Freo these days?

You should read that story again, jezza or have someone read it to you.

The story talks about him being delisted because his kicking wasn't AFL standard. It then explains how he worked on it and I'd assume his coaches worked on it and now it is AFL standard.

Maybe we should ask his coaches to work on our blokes.

Either way, to all those who talk about skills not being important and can't be trained into existing players, they should look at what Collins has achieved at a non-professional club.

That isn't media spin or fake news but a pointer that professionals should be looking at but who needs skills. 2020 right?

Actually very good point. There is definitely rumours and gossip in football and you were right about Hill which I did give credit for. I just don't see this as hype.
I see it as good news story. Don't give up on your dream and good luck to him. These are good stories that young kids who miss out can look up to.
Hype is what you get for every young kid that is considered a top ten draft choice, that you, I and most others get sucked into.

Collins just didn't learn. He should have been avoiding any kicking, more two fisted spoils instead of marking and no handballing...the ball is so unpredictable. Wish Zac had stayed on as a skills coach.

It is a good news story but why does it have to have a negative connection back to Freo for most of those who read the story??

He dominated the WAFL when he was here but when he played in the bigs he wasn’t up to it. Time will tell if things have changed - good luck to him.

But what in that story is incorrect? What should they say that is nice about what happened to him and his time at Fremantle? Why do they have to sugar coat the truth?

We have a history of this and maybe that's what they are suggesting. I would expect the same report with another club's name inserted if that was the case.

As a matter of interest there must be other clubs that have let players go who have made a go of it the second time around. Can anyone list some such cases?

You mean to say Collins was behind Hamling, a bloke who spent a couple of years struggling to overcome a broken leg, a 32 year old playing during a rebuild, a kid drafted that year who the coach had declared would move into the midfield eventually and another kid drafted that year who was being moulded into a forward? Yeah, real tough competition for Collins there, no wonder he wasn't retained.

I always liked the look of Collins and championed him as needing more AFL games in his time at Freo. His reading of the play and overhead marking was always fantastic and I liked his decision making under pressure, something necessary under RL coached sides considering how tough it is back there. The knocks on his kicking were overrated, KPD's aren't exactly known for being good kicks and we'd just carried possibly the worst kick of all time for the previous 6 years at FB. His handpassing was good and APearce is also a far worse kick.

He always seemed like a good bloke to me and I hope he gets another chance with a coach he can work with.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Flag 2005, the reason it's negatively connected to Freo is threefold:

1) it may be that an amateur club has fixed his kicking,

2) good kid not getting on with the coach

3) we let a good player go.

It was a great pick by Lloyd. Big tick there. But then he got into our football system and failed. When removed from our system he possibly started prospering again.

He'll get another chance. And we'll know a thing or two about the current state of our football operations next year.

Collins and Taberner were in the same coach-dictated wilderness with Ross last season.

Now Tabs is lauded. The narrative changed. His performance is pretty much the same, but now with more expectations.

How quickly we forget. This could just as easily have been a story about Taberner as the one that got away.

The reason there is a negative conation is because we have a track record. Menegola? No good. Except apparently he is, we just couldn't get it out of him. Ok. De Boer. Not required. Except, maybe we got that wrong? Collins. No good. Except maybe is is actually good and we couldn't get it out of him? Taberner. Not good enough. Except now he is. With performances practically identical prior to and after.

Anyone care to name another club that seems to string a few coincidences like this together?

Hawthorn have actually had some pretty bad ones. They had Menegola before us. The worst ones are Josh Kennedy - one of the best inside mids of a generation and now captain of Sydney and Ben McGlynn and absolute gun small forward also traded to the Sydney Swans.

I guess I'm talking recently, with the Hawks we could go back to G. Ablett. However the Hawks results speak for themselves. Ours don't.
