Are you talking about Gault? I watched him live 3wks ago against Souths and the week before that vs Subi. He's clearly a step above and much cleaner and better than everyone else at WAFL level, certainly at Swans. He was very good in both those games and I rate him highly.

He'll be 26 though with a few good years at AFL level left. He shouldn't be in our calculations but I have no doubt he could be very handy for a side in contention.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

It's interesting watching the footy talk shows discussing all the gun players that GWS is missing through injury and likely to get back for finals. Amongst this list is one Matt De Boer. Amazing how we got this delisting wrong. We didn't even get a player in exchange and now he is an integral part of the GWS premiership hunt.

Let’s remember that DeBoer was and is a very specific role player - defensive forward.

The reason why he is so critical for a young side like GWS is his extra 4-5 years in the system and the harder, stronger body with it. Da Pig is not a particularly skilful or quick player but he doesn’t need to be with the amount of high end draft talent around him. His job is to keep the footy inside 50 and popping up for a goal or two when all other defenders are busy with Cameron, Lobb, Greene, Kelly....

He wouldn’t be getting a game for us either unless blokes like Ziggy or Grey we’re missing out.

I wish him the absolutely best and he was an integral part of our side when we were flying.

But his spot went to Luke Ryan - so I’s call that a win-win for everyone and both teams got what they needed.

I know that was the role he(and others) were forced to play at Freo Jason. I might be wrong but I think he's been playing as a the big bodied midfielder at GWS , which is what he was best at for us too when given the opportunity.

I love how everyone thinks a 22 year old is 'mature age' - sounds like they'll be pushing a walker in the supermarket at 30.

Whenever I see Sandi I call him kid.

I think Sandi will start with a walking stick... and if he brings it to the game, I'll sign it.

If de Boer’s 186cm and 86kg is ‘big-bodied’ at GWS then they really do need to spend more time in the gym - and on the stretching rack.

The only player we have now that is anywhere near as hard at the ball and the opponent is Brady Grey and he's 182cm and 86kg. DeBoer was always our leading tackler, hard as nails, as inside as they get and cleared the path for others around him.
Every team needs players like him because others feel better for having him out there with them. GWS got a bargain.
I'd play him any day of the week before Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Matera and maybe even Tucker. Still holding out some hope for him but it's dwindling.

So Ryan has been playing as a defensive forward all year, who has been the half back flanker? Balla's? Matera? Taberner? Cox?

What I have seen of De Boer this year, his kicking and handballing has sharpened up a bit, but that is probably due to being the 5th or 6th forward, drawing the 5th or 6th defender ayy? Not from spending more time at training honing those skills.

I think the other thing that we miss in De Boer is his on field leadership skills. I can't think of any other players that have gone from a struggling club to a club that is in the finals, is a regular in that side and been voted into their leadership group.
And it (probably obviously) pi55e5 me off that we got nothing for him.

Dutchy isn't really a defensive forward at GWS, he's a midfielder who gets rotations forward where his best attribute is his run and tackling (great for forward pressure acts).

He's also 28 and still has several years left which means he had plenty of time to be of use to Freo in the rebuild as a leader and role model for the huge turnover of kids. Possibly more than that, he is an enforcer who makes his teammates walk taller and know they have Dutchy to help them if there's any trouble. I have no doubt who would have been lining up Gaff first a few weeks ago for some bone crunching hits as he tagged him for the rest of the game.

Turfing blokes like that while signing D Pearce up for a few years at Peel is a huge mistake by management that has gone completely unpunished.

Yeah I must admit, getting rid of De Boer was one of the most puzzling moves I've seen.

I don’t recall saying Dutchy and Ryan are, or were ever intended to be, ‘like for like’ players. That’s just being disingenuous.

We can also wax lyrical in theoretical-land about the what if’s when it comes to who should’ve been retained vs who was let go at the end of ‘16.

My point is, from a purely list size perspective, Dutchy’s spot was ultimately filled by Ryan.

I, too, would’ve let a few go before Dutchy but it is what it is.

It’s not like we swapped Dutchy for a Deluca-type - who was also taken with pick 60-something - who promised a lot but delivered little.

Unfortunately I don’t think Dutchy will ever reach the heights of the GF he played with us the way the expansion teams like GWS are haemorrhaging talent. If Shiel goes as mooted, Dutchy might find himself getting a bit more attention than just the 4th or 5th best midfielder/defender that he currently does.
