No, just a pun. I know what you mean about those panel shows in general. I do like the two I mentioned though.

This is the scariest sentence in the article,

“We want multi-positional players who can play midfield, forward, and back. If you look around at the best teams, they're multi-positional,” he said.

No change in game plan then, though I don't know why he mentioned them being able to play forward, given it is not a prerequisite of the game plan

I think they need to go to the labs and call upon genetic engineering and stem cell research to come up with a superior footballer who can play in every position, run all day, kick goals with sniper accuracy and never break down.

We probably have more players inquiring to come to us than the vast majority of other sides barring Hawthorn.

When you consider about 20% or more of AFL players are West Aussies who are likely to want a trade home at some point and we only have to compete with 1 out of 17 clubs for those players, we get a leg up in the player movement market. The 16 other sides competing for the rest of those players on the East have a much tougher time.

It should be even easier for the marketing men running our club considering how easy a sell WA should be. Good weather, good beaches, lower cost of living, new ETAF, new stadium, best player in the comp leading you, what more could you want? The excuses from RL are flowing thick and fast these days.

I'd be more worried about the intentions of the club if RL is so worried about trading for players. We're rebuilding atm, not topping up for a premiership tilt. You're supposed to be getting kids into the side and teaching them how to play with flair and skill. We've already brought in Bennel, McCarthy, Hill, Kersten, Hamling, Matera and Wilson as middle aged players along with the drafting of mature types like Ryan, Jones, Banfield and Switkowski.

If we go chasing more middle aged, mid tier players, the rebuild is a definite fail. Target kids, high end talented kids. Get top draft picks and use them.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I pretty much agree with you Biz. But if Hogan or Kelly is available you would have to look at it. There is some risk in the draft. I do remember you telling us to draft Jarrad Brander last year and he can't even get a kick in the WAFL.
I know its early and he might come good but there is some risk in the draft. I think they are both only 23.

Haven't read the whole thread... the subject is part of the wider presser post game posted in another thread, yeah?

So I watched that presser for interest's sake on the back of the other thread. Watched the whole thing which is unusual for me as I struggle to get enthusiastic for footy related spin these days.

I though most of what RoLy said was fair enough and on the money. He was clearly chilled out and putting the feet up after the last game of the season so he let a bit more slip than what I'm used to. Most of it was light hearted and he revealed more of his character in doing that. As someone with an often misunderstood dry humour I can relate to the way he speaks. He's joking around in his head more than someone representing a club, supporters and the whole multi million dollar business thing probably should but at least that way, someone's getting a laugh out of his coaching.

He's right... it is harder for the West Coast based clubs to recruit on the basis of travel. Every player's going to be aware of it. The flip side of that argument is how well Freo have done with preserving players well past the 200 game mark. Really well, is the answer.

As for trading in... with one decent pick in the draft and spots to fill there's no reason not to. A mate of a mate who has a mate who spoke to someone reckons the club has money to spare under the cap which makes sense looking at the list. Why not go for quality in those circumstances? You've got cash, you've got hole in your list. Go fill them. If you can grab a WA player all the better and that to me, is where Freo should definitely be looking to recruit. Build a WA team and go hard on the pride.

As for that thing about player who can switch... well, yeah. Of course... the game is so fluid you need guys who can swap in and out without losing your efficiency across the line. He's built a really good defense. There's the makings of a forward line in place. The midfield has been beaten a bit and there are players in there that do swing through from down back into attack. Stephen Hill is the best example and he's racked up 200 games already. Some more like him would be cool. Some grunty inside players would be good as well. Gets my vote.

I'd trade for young stars like Hogan or Kelly (or Lynch), but McGovern, Lobb and co are far from what we need.

Brander has played mostly across half back for the Eagles WAFL side this season and has looked good in the air when I've watched games. He hasn't had dominant games yet but that's expected of a young tall.

Yeah he has looked OK in the backline but has struggled when played forward. Its easier as youngster to come in a play in defence rather than forward. Glad to hear your on the Hogan and Kelly train.

One of the more noticeable aspects of this 'rebuild' is shambolic nature of the whole thing. It seems to have no direction and no strategy behind what we are doing. I've mentioned this before and the usual suspects howl me down each time but nobody yet has pointed to what our rebuild strategy actually is. All we get is nonsense arguments about when it 'really' started.

At the end of 2015, we had broken down as a side. We staggered to the end of the season and got done by Hawthorn in the prelim. We lost Sylvia (no really), McPharlin and Duffield. We delisted 7 players including Crowley and replaced them with mid to high range draft picks. the only player we traded in was an injured Bennell, who wasn't expected to play much until we sorted out his long term injuries.

We simply didn't load up for a finals tilt as some would have you believe. Prior to start of the season Lyon's contract was extended to 'oversee the rebuild' (March / April 2016). So we took on mostly kids but also mature age talent going cheap in Yarran.

The following year we traded in McCarthy, Hill, Hamling and Kersten. All mature aged players and drafted kids for the rookie list. Pavlich retired and we delisted 10 players and rookied 2 of those. The players delisted included de Boer, Pearce C, Mzungu, Barlow and Silvagni. We also lost Mayne but used that pick for Hill.

So again, we weren't loading up for a tilt at the flag but rebuilding by swapping out mature players for more mature players.

Last year we traded in mature players in Wilson and Matera and drafted a pile of kids and delisted 6 players including Clarke, Griffin and Suban. We lost Yarran, Ibbotson and Dawson to retirements.

So far in this 'rebuild' we traded in as many mature players as kids and traded out slightly more. We haven't targeted particular players other than those who announced they wanted to come home. We had a few wins with Wilson and Hill but as many losses with Matera and Kersten. McCarthy and Bennell could yet fall into either camp but so far, not promising is the best description.

So, what is our rebuild strategy? As far as I can see it seem to be turn over as much of the list as possible. Are we targeting KPPs? Mids? Smalls? Well not really. We seem to be targeting blokes wanting to come back to WA. Thats not a list management strategy but it gives some a bunch of ready made excuses to justify any real progress.

I'm not buying this 'hard to attract players to WA' as a valid argument. Our problems don't lie in the refusal of players to come here but in the players we are taking on. The only attribute we seem to be looking for is somebody wanting to come here.

Now we want more mature players who are fast, can play forward and back. Its not a properly formulated rebuild. Its a dogs breakfast. Clubs like Hawthorn can rebuild in a fraction of the time because they look for certain qualities in players, go hard to get them and make list management decisions with particular goals in mind. I'm not seeing that with us. I'm seeing signs of not really knowing what they actually want and the results reflect that.

I wonder whether RoLy lives in some sort of alternative reality or what. Probably our greatest problem in attracting good footballers is our game day performances this year and in previous years. I would think aspiring footballers, footballers and their player agents/parents actually watch football games. Is it really a surprise that we have trouble recruiting when even the most passionate supporters can barely stomach our games. Does he really believe that no one has seen us sort-of play the game?

Gaffer tape RoLy to a chair and make him watch one of our game tapes from start to finish.

So go to the draft table - they have to come here.

Which is very strange, because watching a Roly coached team play you'd never have thought he was a risk taker.
