I thought yesterday's game once again showed we're we are at and it's been the same for years. We can't kick enough goals.
Our backline was great, midfield good but even though we went inside 50 more often than them we struggled to kick goals. We did at least have forwards there because we took the game on and went through the corridor more than we have been.
Ballas turned back the clock and kicked nearly half of our goals. That's not going to happen very often.
Some people want to put Fyfe forward because of his marking. I don't agree with it but besides that he's still not a great kick, especially on goals. We really don't have a good goal kicking midfielder unless you say Walters who we can't decide if he should be a midfielder or forward.
Tabener easily looks like our best big man option but it appeared that we were playing him at CHF yesterday as many of his possessions were taken up around the wing and he didn't look like impacting on the scoreboard. He also is not a reliable set shot.
Cox shows glimpses but I think he's still a long way off. I can't remember seeing him actually make lead yesterday and his kicking on goal is dreadful.
McCarthy at least seems to be doing better as the third option and he is one of our better set shots.
Not sure how it can be changed but it looks like a massive task.
And I don't think plonking Lobb down there is the answer either.

I can't remember a game like yesterday when we played (set up with) a three man forward line.

they battled again 5 backmen while we played two extra on the wings for spread. Tacticly I thought it was very good.

It was a good idea Larkin. They kicked deep to strong marking forwards and those extra wingers pushed up well.

He clearly thinks this leg speed issue is a thing...which is bizarre to me.

Our forwards (McCarthy and Cox in particular) spend a lot of time playing from behind and trying to take marks from that position. I have no idea why. At least Tabs tends to lead toward the ball carrier.

I know this isn't the majority view, but to my eye when we've had all of Tabs, Cox and CamMac in the team, our forward structure has looked good. Where we fall apart is where we get smashed in the clearances, and our players follow the ball down to the back 50. Where most see the lack of forwards as the cause of our problems, I tend to see it as a symptom of other problems.

We just shaded Collingwood in the middle yesterday, meaning we weren't always launching our attacks 150m from goal. That really makes a difference. We also managed to force a few turnovers with our tackling, which again has been lacking this year.

I think we will be able to eek out wins with a forward line based around Tabs and Cox, but they would need to show a bit more improvement to form part of an elite forward line. Tabs continues to look very dangerous in the air, and was a good target up the ground. But his kicking into the forward 50 and at goal is sub-par. A couple of times yesterday he had the ball 70m from goal with Freo favoured two on one in the forward 50 and he found the one each time. He wasn't the lone ranger, but you just can't burn chances like that. Cox wasn't much better.

I also though Cox and Tabs got in each other's way a bit again. There was one play in the first quarter when Tabs literally ran into the back of Cox and took both players to ground and out of the contest. Hopefully another good pre-season together will see them build better chemistry.

Perhaps it's a pipe dream now, but there was a world in which we could have had two Hills, Walters and Bennell kicking into the forward 50. Tabs and Cox might not be elite all-around players, but they are good enough in the air that if they can just get to the right spot, those other players would make it work.

Blokes like Kennedy and Buddy are elite. The are marking targets, they a good shots at goal, they can trounce their bloke on the lead, their timing is perfect, they read the game well, they can handle the ball on the ground, they can spot up a target when they have the ball in hand and they can put on defensive pressure.

Tabs can be an elite marking target, but I’d say he’s probably below average at almost every other facet of being a key forward. He would be in our bottom 5 for game awareness.

He brings great contested marking to the table but leaves too much off the table to ever be an elite forward.

He needs to kick better and improve when the ball is on the ground. Then he is a fine player indeed .

CA having Hamling back made everyone look better in the backline. He fixed some of those broken links from last week - even Alex looked better as did Duman. Momentum swings on players like him and when you have it every thing is easier and when you don't you chase or scrag and are forever under pressure. With our best players on the park we are a half decent team and will get better when the best on the new blokes get more experience. But our balance and raw talent isn't quite enough yet. A couple of additional A graders in the right place and anything is possible.
