Hughes is possibly the worst kick at Fremantle, which is saying something. I don’t see a future as a forward for him. It’s a shame because he as alot of other attributes, in particular his marking and he is rarely beaten one on one. Will be interesting to see if he gets another contract.

Is there something in how players train as well? Ballas use to have that speed, but with the increase in time in the midfields and on ground, his explosive acceleration seemed to disappear. Now that could have been injury or age, but if you are training to gut run, then you may have to sacrifice speed. Stephen Hill is another - trained to run through the midfield and bulk up to play inside, and seemed to lose some of that dash that typified his early years.

Just a thought.

Speed schmeed. We need players who have skills and can hit targets by hand and foot whilst under pressure and who can make good decisions. Simple.

I think you all have got this wrong. Ross has been down the road playing make up hugs and kisses after the Derby. He has had a few of their treats at morning tea , likes them a lot and wants them in his morning tea room. This also explains his new focus on us drafting from the Marvel comics and the meetings he says he has had with the Incredibles.

I'd like a bit more speed in the game too, but I think ASADA would frown upon that.

Can't agree with those saying all we need to do to improve skills is to practise more. If players in the system for two or three years haven't got skills by now I don't reckon they will ever have them. A change of clubs doesn't seem to help either. Some might reckon Mayne would have improved his kicking when he went under the wing of new coaches at the Pies. But I saw no evidence of that on Saturday. Really hard to do, but we have to identify skills before we draft guys fresh out of high school. Too late otherwise.
Hope I'm wrong but I can't see that a few more hours of goal-kicking practice is going to greatly improve Cox, for instance.
And if an obsessional trainer like Fyfe is missing straightforward shots at this stage of his career who could believe he will suddenly become a gun goal-kicker?

Fyfe was a forward pocket/ full forward when drafted, and he regularly kicked bags of goals, so that tells me you DO need to practise your skills. The 15 or so coaches I played under also had the strong opinion that you need to practise your skills to keep them sharp.

Mayne was a dead eye dick in his early days at Freo. Did he suddenly stop practising?

Tarrant was a shocking kick for goal who became a class defender. And nobody even remembers if The Fist could kick or not.

Almost everyone can become reasonably skillful. But a great team will get the ball in the hands of those with elite skills.

Mayne is an absolute nervous nellie in set shots. His field kicking is at a much higher level. Cox drops it too soon. Fyfe is also hit and miss... Set shots can make grown men get all giddy. Practice is one thing but Mayne has taken the routine to a pedantic level where technique not only kills any natural action but also limits penetration...dropping short etc.

And then there is the strange case of Ian Baker Finch, who won a British Open, but reverted to being a club hack. Skills come and skills go...

I think the skill thing is a little overplayed. Set shots are one of the few skills that exist in isolation, which is why people tend to focus on them and get frustrated. Executing every other skill on a footy field is a combination of mechanical skill, decision-making, composure, confidence, game awareness, having available options and knowing instinctively where they are, and even fitness.

There seems to be this notion that if you just 'train skills' for an hour that will improve how skilful our team is. It's not that simple. The effectiveness of most kicks and handballs isn't determined by how precisely a player executes that mechanical skill, it's about knowing where the option is, having the composure and confidence to look for them, and then executing the skill. In that sense, I can see why you might want to train those skills in game situations.

There are some players who can execute skills that other can't. For example, there are kicks available to a player like Wilson that aren't the most of the team. It's because he can have a bit of a dash, and belt a footy 55 hard and flat. To an average player, that option is 70m away and just not available, so they'll look sideways and chip it 30m. I don't think you can train players to be Wilson, but you can train players to look for the best available option. Good teams have played together long enough to know where their teammates will be. That takes time and repetitions, and we aren't close to being there yet.

...and still Roly's apologists dismiss the need for improved skills while pretending that consistent results prove otherwise.

Hawthorn have a primary focus on skills. When was the last time we won a game against the Hawks?

Simpson started at the egurls with a focus on their poor skills and we haven't beaten them in over 3 seasons.

Until we can beat the better skilled teams consistently, it is beyond stupid to dismiss the skills as 'not so important'.

I guess if winning isn't important, neither are the things that get you the wins. Until then, good skills are absolutely vital.
Egurls Suck!
