TOPIC: Speed

I think we have enough speed, but we don't have enough quickness. Watching Jayden Jaden Jeidon Jeidin Jeydon Jeydin Jeydan Jeidan Jaidyn Stephenson yesterday, it was noticeable how easily he could separate from whomever was manning him up to get on the end of a lead. Even if he didn't mark it, he had time to gather.

I can't think of too many players with genuine dash in our team. Sure, Langdon and Hill can cover territory, and Wilson and even Hamling have great acceleration, but so many of our fast guys are gut runners rather than burst-fast.

The only forward on our team that can create separation is CamMac. It's an issue, especially if you want players leading to the ball.

We do lack speed in a couple of areas. Our centre square mids such as Fyfe, Mundy, Neale and even up and comers like Cerra are not quick. They’re not great at running oposition players down. We lack small forwards with speed and this is what nearly every top team has. Switkowski may be an exception but Ballantyne has lost pace and Crowden, Giro and Matera aren’t super quick.
But more than speed we lack height amongst midfielders. Our mids a few years ago such as Barlow, Fyfe, Mundy and Crowley were so imposing then we started recruiting smalls. Giro, Crowden, Switkowski might become good players but can’t see how they can be in the same side when we also have Walters, Ballas, B. Hill and even Langdon plus Matera in reserve. It’s a bit late but we do need big bodied speedy midfielders.

So Morgan we haven't been drafting talls, certainly not for skill and now we lack speed.

So short , slow and unskilled players essentially.

But Lloyds been okay!

Lack of speed is a furfy and is being used as a distraction from another poor season. It seems to be working with some.

Any team 'looks' slow when their opponents are better organised and move the ball better.

You don't need to have a team of Usain Bolts if you are organised enough to have players leading to the ball, if you are skillful enough to hit those leads and kick straight on goal. Rather than bemoan the fact that you don't have half a dozen Pavlichs out there, why not do something about making what you do have more effective.

Of all our mids, the only one I'd be happy having a set shot on goal is Mundy. Our forwards could use more practice kicking on goal. We know Cox can kick straight. We know Tabs can kick straight. We also know that Cammac can kick straight. We know these things because they've shown that in the past but we aren't seeing it now. Fyfe was a straight kick on goal when he started but he's pretty woeful these days.

I'm always being told by people these days that if you don't use it, you lose it. That applies to almost everything and in football if you don't regularly practice your skills, they will decay.

Make kicking a focus for forwards (and mids) and see how much faster we look.

Agree with that except for Cox being a straight kick. Must be that was so long ago that I've forgotten it.

Also agree with Morgan's comment on Stephenson. His ability to move away from his man from a standing start is exceptional. Pace like that in your forward line is hard to find. If he or players like him a given the chance to be one out in the forward line you'd back them in most times. Plus he's pretty good overhead and once the ball hits the ground.

Collingwood have had big injuries all year but they've found a way through it. Buckley seems to have changed his coaching style. We don't really have anyone like that and even if we did it would be debatable whether Roly would play someone like Stephenson in the same way.

Its quite obvious by these comments about the lack of speed we are gonna make a late play for Ussain Bolt before the Central Coast Mariners nab him....

We've done sillier things....it could work - hes tall, he's big, he's fast, he'll put bums on seats....and he dont need skills!

Get the rowing coach onto him and we'll have a player !!

Hypen, this site needs a You BOOFHEAD button more.

Morgan, you are right, it is not the speed over 30 meters that counts, it is that 5-10 meter burst that destroys the opposition.

Freo need a Luke Breust type. Pace, foot skill, decisive, goal sense, doesn’t lose his feet.

Please find the tree they grow on.

No good Mushy. He's not multi positional and apparently that's the go now.

We know Hughes recorded the quickest game day speed in the AFL last season
He may be worth a punt as a Bruest type mid size forward. But that would require innovative thought. And from a standing start the forward decides to lead so the defender's reaction is always at least a tenth of a second after that. So naturally there is immediate separation, adjusting for direction of leading player on top of reaction lapse. So...defenders need to better understand their opponent and body check or play in front and try to minimise the speed advantage of the opponent. Not always down to straight line speed. Do your homework, play smarter...

It would be great if the team could train on the various skills 28 hours a day in addition to fitness, strength, injury remediation, tactics training, etc. In practice, in footy and everyfreakingwhere else the normal improvement process is to identify the biggest problems and bump those areas up. Maybe the Fremantle Football Club has a method that uses darts or dice or something but I doubt it.

I agree Hughes is a speedy player. He should be in the forward line as a defensive fwd.

The only team Collingwood beat this year in the 8 was Melbourne and they finished 3rd?

Same way Richmond loses 80% of their interstate games and finish two games clear on top - home ground advantage that spans 16-17 weeks of a 22 round season.
