TOPIC: Speed

If you are organised around the ground, all on the same page you tend to start looking skillful.

There are very few easy kicks for the Dockers at present.

Here's a thought, evolve a game plan with the kids; start it really simple with players ahead of the ball and as they grow tighten it up to something that's harder to score against.

Drum, Knights and Mark Neald all made the mistake of starting at end state.

I'd agree with that, hypen if we had a majority of players who could hit a target 'reliably' ahead of them. I'd make the same point about kicking on goals as we are certainly deficient in that regard.

I would probably describe it the other way around. If you had a sufficient level of skills, you could have more players ahead of the ball because there would be less chance of a turnover and getting caught out with the ball coming back the other way.

We would also not look as slow as we wouldn't be chasing the ball or our opponents so much.

Agree with the start it simple idea nut I'd see it more as a see a team mate, hit a team mate. Its also harder for your opponents to score if they don't get the ball so much.

When did Maynes' goalkicking accuracy deteriorate? I would hazard a guess, when he stopped practising for the goalkicking, likewise Fyfe, likewise B Hill's field kicking. See a trend anyone?

Getting back to the thread topic, I am seriously wondering if Roly is watching the same games as us. His desire to add more “speed” seems to stem from a common theme in his press conferences about being “beaten on the spread” or “they spread harder than us”.
Let me give you a little hint Ross, it’s not that they are running harder or faster than us, it’s because we allow them to have an unmarked player hanging 10-15m off the stoppage (usually corridor side) so in the 50% of times they win the ball, they have an easy outlet to a man in space. Who then runs forward and forces one of our players down the ground to come off their opponent to challenge said man in space, commonly referred to by even the most moronic of tv commentators as “creating the overlap” as long as they don’t fluff a kick or hand pass they can easily move the ball down the ground, making us appear to resemble witches hats.

Just in case anyone missed it, nothing to do with leg speed, explosive speed or illicit drugs. Everything to do with game plan and strategy.
But Roly thinks we need fast, big, multi positional players because that’s what “all the good teams have”.
They also have a game plan that involves creating space, finding unmarked players and moving the ball quickly.

You're spot on, PK.

I watched in dismay on Saturday as we repeatedly sat off players in the midfield giving Collingwood easy passage through the middle and the opportunity for low-pressure kicks into their forward 50.

I haven't played the game so I'm sure someone can give me a reason, but I still don't understand why choosing not to mark your opposite number closely when you're defending is considered a clever strategy

We see the same thing when the opposition come out of defence, our players are guarding space and zones instead of players, and the opposition don't kick it to zones or space that is well defended.

What a furphy about speed.
Some of the best players ever were slow as wet weeks. Other than Puopolo and Rioli, the Hawks were full of snails that could kick. Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Burgoyne the list goes on. Dont confuse lack of speed though with the ability to create time and space and make time stand still. They have that in spades.

Skills are in the most part recruited not trained. Doesnt mean certain skills like goal kicking routine cant be polished though. Whats the Dockers goal kicking routine?? Two steps and a stab? Wobbly ball drops from chest high like Cammac? No doubt our goal kickers should be training a set routine. It infuriates me to see Fyfe take two steps and take a stab from 25 m and miss. Has he not watched Dunstall, Ben Brown etc, Has Roly not watched Tv?

Most of all though as others have noted it comes completely down to game plan and how the Dockers gets sucked in to the ball, the opposition stay wide with a release valve out wide (Gaffy loitering on the fat side all day long with no one on him) and then we are chasing tail, as they Chinese Checker it down field and guess what, we look slow.

We should recruit for elite kickers and decision makers, not speed. If they are quick too well so be it but how we are going to get someone with our picks is anyones guess. The only positive of this statement is that it is now apparent that Roly will have some input into recruitment and so we will know where the buck stops on this next selection.

The ability to make space and time comes from the ability to move quickly from standstill, and it only needs to be 5 meters, those players will do that then everyone else runs past them, as they try to hit full pace, leaving the player with the ball all on his own.

As for Lyon watching Brown & co with their goalkicking routines, they don't look like they are putting any effort into it, so it is not worth copying. At least our boys are making an effort to stab at goals.

Look I'm no sports scientist and frankly I'm actually pretty skeptical about the whole concept but surely one of these boffins could come up with a technique that improves skills and fitness simultaneously ?

They came up with that a long time ago, but it is too old school for Lyon and co to make sure players are nailing their skills while running. ( I mean, it's not as if you would need to do that in a game LOL)
