TOPIC: Freo v Collingwood

Great effort, but too many players had ‘nearly’ good games. Fyfe was a case study in frustrated effort, our forwards were just about good enough, Hill burned a few too many chances, Grey’s effort was matched only by his lack of class. Everyone gave it a crack and almost to a man they let themselves down with a bit of touch or composure.

There’s a bit too work with, but by Clive it’s frustrating to watch sometimes.

Our best game of this year

If we bring that next year consistently after a good preseason I will be happy

Couple of points...

Players showed spiirit but lacked the skills to seal the win.

Some of the worse culprits with their poor disposal were senior players Fye, Neale and Hill. Sure we need to work on our skills but I expect better from the senior blokes.

Plenty to like in Duman, Ziggy & Gray (notwithstanding his disposal let’s him down). A different team with Hamling and Pearce out there together.

AAJohnno should be the next Freo Hall of Famer, after Pav & AALuuukkke, when he’s done his time. That back heel to stop a Collywobble goal in the last typifies the exquisite skills the man possesses.

All in all it was a response of the sort of club that has soul and are all running in the same direction would and should produce.

Cletus, Cox is 19 and has had a pretty good season. A pre season of Balla's reminding him how to kick for goal, and he will light up Freo.

Poor skills and poor decision making by young and old today for both sides. Only the sacred Victorian cow "Collingwood " and "Scott Pendlebury" with Umps on their side was the small difference. Ruck holding, kicking in danger, 12m kicks all went their way today not both ways. Holding the ball when a tackle was applied when it bounced into the hands was one sided. Well done Collingwood! Your mother mother must be worried about you being so far from home for the fourth time this year.

A pessimist might point out that we kicked 9 goals in perfect conditions against a makeshift defence, with four of them kicked by a 31 year old who has 1 more year of footy left.

Yes it was a great effort today and it needed to be after last week's lack of effort.
.
Poor skills were difference between winning and losing. Missed targets, missed goals, missed handballs.

Its not new and it won't be fixed by 20 minutes of skills work at training. Like successful teams, skills needs to be a focus not an also ran.

That was a game we really should have won.

Surely a pessimist wouldn't have watched it in the first place.

We lost the hit outs by two and contested possessions by six. We won every other stat but let our selves down badly with our skills and disposal.

If ever there was a game that showed that effort is not enough to win you games it was today.

If it's true that we only do twenty minute skill sessions at training then things aren't going to change on field unless they do in this area at training.

I got to the station and it was tumbleweeds I thought maybe I had the wrong time or day but it was a great game, great effort and the fans there loved it. The umps were dodgy early but seemed to warm up - somewhat. Hey a three man forward line - who would have thunk that. Ballas was on fire as was Wilson. All up a good end to the year... considering. Thanks for the memories MJ. (and Duman)

I'd like to see Fyfe work on a dribble kick over summer. His goal kicking is shocking.

Over the year our disposal efficiency was around 73% when the best was 74% and we are 6th for turnovers so I’m not sure the skills problem is the big problem constantly cited. Poor decision making is a bigger issue which will improve with game experience. Ie hand balling to a bloke under the pump or taking too long to move the ball.

Collingwood who are 3rd butchered the ball as much as we did.

Well I guess we can either address the problem that everybody else can see and work on our skills or we can continue going down the path 'waiting' for everybody to get more experience.

Oh wait, Fyfe, Hill and Neale all butchered the ball a lot today. How much more experience will they need before their skills magically improve?

If you can hit targets and if you can kick goals, then decision making won't look so bad.

We kicked 9 . 13 today. Last week it was 3 . 7 Does anybody really think that our kicking skills don't need work? We had one more scoring shot than Colligwood and lost because of poor goal kicking. If Collingwood had butchered the ball as much as we did, they would have lost.

Just because Roly won't acknowledge the obvious is no reason for me to pretend that skills aren't an issue
