I thought the club organised a classy farewell for Michael Johnson and Lee Spurr. In a way, it reminded me of true club values, that can't or won't be eradicated by insensitive CEOs and a greedy commercial department, values that do genuinely separate the Fremantle footy club and it's supporters from that mob of baying, heathen boo-boys up the road.
Which is why yesterday's end of game ceremony also saddened me too, because Danyle Pearce didn't feel he could take part. I'd really wanted to believe that his motives were altruistic, that he felt his time would be better spent helping Peel, but after listening to the utterly mindless booing of Chris Mayne during yesterday's game, I now understand that Danyle's fears of a hostile send-off, and a jeering crowd, were probably well founded.
Chris Mayne was a good servant to Fremantle, who never gave less than he could as a player and probably still bleeds purple. And he was booed, repeatedly. I just don't understand the motivation of some so-called supporters.
A sad day, all round.
