TOPIC: Thanks Johnno

I think this needs its own thread.

There aren't too many players where I am genuinely worried about getting emotional for their last game, but Johnno is one. He's been a favourite of mine (and I suspect most) for a really long time.

I wrote a few years ago that people talk a lot about courage in footy, mostly in terms of standing under the ball, and sometimes about gut-running. Johnno would go back with the flight, but he also had the courage to take a risk, back his judgment, take a little bit of time and hit a player with a pass in the middle of the park. He was willing to look like a goose occasionally when he stuffed it up, but he had the awareness, skills and composure to make it happen way more often than not. That combination of courage, conviction and skill is so rare, and, in my view, undervalued.

He always struck me as the leader of the best backline we've ever had (though McPharlin would have a claim to be its best player), and I always felt more comfortable when he was there. Settling into that role as an intercept tall who could rebound but also switch onto key forwards when required really unlocked the potential in that group, and elevated his career and the team. I was so glad to have seen him consistently play at his best for a number of years there.

I know he had a couple of off-field incidents, but that always made him seem more human to me. I think the club handled both situations pretty well, and the benefit was keeping a great player and, by all reports a great person at the club. It's important to remember that we all make mistakes and are greater than the dumbest things we do.

Thanks Johnno, it's been a pleasure. Be sure to give our guys a point in the right direction in your last game. Purple Jesus knows our team, and club, could use some guidance from an old head these days.

I always loved Johnno. Sometimes he'd be up against two opponents and I'd feel sorry for them, knowing that they expected to win the ball, but that was not the likely outcome.
A few years ago I saw him on Friday morning with his laptop, watching replays of Sydney, studying their players so that he'd know how to play them.
Then there was the time he was injured and dressed in his suit was chatting with a mate outside Subi as people poured out at the end of the game. People would stop and get their photo taken with him. I put on my showman's voice and announced to the crowd, "Step right up and get your photo taken with Michael Johnson, only $2". Got a laugh from him.

Well said Morgan.

Can everyone in attendance please try to raise a cheer every time he points? I'll be downing a beverage each time from afar, and wishing I could be there.

And if we're in a position to set him up for a goal, that would be tops.

Yeah well said Morgan. Loved watching him play and directing traffic. The really good players find time and space on a footy field and Johnno, at his peak, was right up there.
I wish him all the best for the future.

What a graceful footballer with an unusual ball drop and that side step that everybody knew he would do but still got sucked in.
How different things may have been if his body had held up at different times. Couple of AA jumpers and who knows what for the Dockers.
Should go down as one of our best for a very long time.

Over the years I've been able to speak with Johnno on a number of occasions. My best talk was at Lathlain park a few years ago. I was sitting on the outer watching some of the Demons talent on a sunny Saturday morning. There was no one else on the outer and only a handful hardy Perth supporters across the field in the stands (as you would expect in those days). Johnno came over the hill behind me with his little feller - about 4 at the time, I guess - and when I waved he came over, sat down and stretched out on the grass with me. We talked about a lot of things, not all football orientated, and he was genuinely engaged with almost everything going on at the time. A great smile and a quiet sense of humour - open and honest - like many of the Freo players, you would be hard pressed to find a nicer bloke. We've both suffered the same lower back injury - same operation, different surgeons but the same result.

The last time I spoke with him was at the SBS launch of that Nyoongar footballer series last December (at Subi). He was with Stephen and Bradley and all the legends that were there on the day. We laughed about a bunch of things - mostly at Bradley's expense - but it got serious when he spoke about that kebab shop incident. He was glad that it got resolved, but said that it was one of the most difficult things he has faced. I could see that it made him much more wary to simply have a chat with a relative stranger - which is unfortunate. Hopefully everyone can learn from it, but I know there's little that the real knobs of this world will ever learn.

Yes, one of the finest blokes to ever play the game. I was so proud of him squashing that Gaffy twat on our back 50 that day. It says a lot about how a kid that grew up as a Freo supporter feels about his team and the values of our community. Gaffy needed konking and Johnno was the guy that stepped up and delivered (in the right way).

All of that is largely apart from how he played the game (which speaks for itself). He's one of us - the best of us in so many ways. We'll miss him.

There's a great recent shot of him with the Gormeister at some pub - possibly the Navy Club. If I wasn't doing this from my phone I'd put it up for everyone - million dollar smile.

Lovely bloke and a class player. Will be missed.

I have a few what-ifs as a signed-up member from before the club even played a game and one of them is what might have been in the 2014 finals series if we'd had MJ and Elvis both fit and firing in the backline.

Good story Polly.

I know it probably shouldn't make any difference, but the fact that he got caught with the blow at Amplifier Bar (and not some awful nightclub in Subi) and that the bloke he whacked in the kebab shop proved himself, repeatedly, to be a total knobend suggested to me that even when he stuffed up, it was a way I could get behind.

I find it very ironic that he will finish on the same games as McPharlap.

If he gets up!

When Johnno, Luke McPharlin or Roger Hayden had the ball, they were the only Freo players that ever gave me any sort of zen during clutch moments. You could pretty much relax, even when cornered or outnumbered. Too darn good.
