Look, I don't know how good a captain Fyfe is, but there aren't many reasons teams have 87 consecutive goals scored against them. Talent and game plans alone don't account for that outcome.
One explanation is the team is physically and emotionally shot. It looks to my untrained eye that we have the heaviest legs in the league. Some of that may be explainable - we have so many young guys, and blokes coming back from injury, and our experienced players have been covering a heavy load. But maybe our training staff went too hard. We seemed to come back from the bye even more tired, for example.
Another explanation is that the coach has lost the players. It's not obvious from the comments coming out of the club, but maybe the team just doesn't want to play for Lyon anymore.
A third explanation is that there is a schism in the playing group, and they don't want to play for each other. Some of this might be on the coach, but it would be equally damning on the leadership group.
As discussed after his Bob interview, Fyfe is a bright, articulate young man, who is an extraordinary footballer and an inspirational and brave player. He has all the attributes to make a good leader.....and yet from the outside I sense I would find it hard to connect with him on a human level. Doubtless that says more about me than him, but in a group of 40-odd I suspect there would be others who felt the same way. I think it was telling the players voted Mundy ahead of him as captain a couple of years back - they seem very different individuals. Perhaps we just had a group that gravitated more towards Mundy's self-effacing demeanour.
The F7 thing was just incredibly poorly-timed. Even though it was pre-planned, why would you release after an away game to Geelong. The odds weren't going to be in your favour. If you copped the biggest pasting in the club's history, you might be inclined to shut it down. And why wouldn't you release in the bye-round?
And, I know it's a minor thing, but Fyfe standing there in a Freo jumper with the purple replaced with black just irks me. You know someone like Rosich is sitting there thinking 'oh, the Freo jumper looks pretty good in black'.
