TOPIC: 2019

If I appear to some to be defensive of Roly - it mainly stems from the fact that this rebuild is not just his responsibility.

Sure, he needs to teach the younger players how to play and develop them into AFL quality. However, he does not have final say in the recruitment of said players.

If the rebuild is such a disaster, which I believe it’s too early to tell, them there are far more people than just Roly to blame and sacking him won’t change that.

I’m all for a full and frank review of the entire Football Dept (these should really be happening every year no matter the ladder position), identify the weaknesses and recruit people to strengthen those areas.

List management is clearly an issue (and has been from Day 1, IMHO) and with the departure of the previous List Manager, this would be the perfect time to poach a world-class operative in that space.

I don’t know enough about it to nominate someone specifically, but the Hawks & Sydney seem to have done ok in this space for some time. Notwithstanding the relevant advantages each has had over the journey.

Jason,

if you read what many have posted, Roly isn't the only one in the gun. Its starts with Bond as he is the one in charge of everything, including the coaching panel and list management. None of it has been well done for a few years now.

Bond should not be doing the end of season reviews as he is only reviewing his own performance. It needs to be done from outside....but nobody at Freo actually wants that to happen.

I don't feel sorry for Freo, I feel embarrassed for the teams that were beaten by Freo.

Hawthorn can’t properly be put up as the comparison when it comes to rebuilds as Duffield tried to do this morning and as some on here have done. Half the Hawks team are triple premiership players and they have the lopsided advantage, like all successful Victorian clubs, of using free agency to recruit the likes of Mitchell and O’Meara. When you can do that you don’t need draft picks.

Not sure our recent drafting has been that mismanaged. Yes we have brought forward future draft picks to boost up our list ahead of time but surely we had to? This year we have a top 6 draft pick then as many draft picks over 90 that we need. Those above 90 draft picks can be used very effectively to secure a wealth of proven VFL, WAFL, SANFL, NEAFL talent. You just have to look through almost every AFL club this year and you will find one or 2 experienced "top-up" type players making very worthy contributions and in some cases outstanding contributions. I think our list of young talent is as good as we have ever had now we just need to help them out by adding some Barlows, Spurrs, Podsiadly types and then with the Rookie picks again grab a mix of young possibles and some proven performers. With the retirements of the 3 plus at least 3 more delistings from Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Hughes, Tucker, Matera we can add 6 more contributors which should be all we need at this time.

Yeti, I have no problem with and endorse an extensive, external review.

I get frustrated with a long hammered view on here that sacking Roly will somehow solve all our problems. It won’t and without a comprehensive, honest review without fear or favour the next coach in will be a dead man walking, IMHO. Not dissimilar to Ken Judge when he took over down the road.

We have a settled and experienced Board - so they need to be the one’s to spearhead such a review.

If the recruiting of the past 3 seasons has been a bust we will find out pretty quickly next season. A quality skills coach is desperately needed but again, if the cattle we have are not AFL quality, then they’ll be bashing their head against a brick wall like the rest of us - just for different reasons.

Jason, sacking Roly and doing nothing else won't solve all our problems. I, for one have never endorsed that.

I will say it is part of the solution though as he is too inflexible to adapt. Lloyd is gone and that is probably for the best but Bond needs to go as well. The list management at the club hasn't been good, neither has injury management or fitness. Thats not Roly, thats Bond.

The ass coaches don't add much to our chances of success like they do at other clubs.

Unfortunately, Bond controls most of the things that mean success or failure....he does the reviews as well
