The worst comment in the press conference after the game was Ross’ comment regarding the 6-6 vs 7-6 setup. There must be more options / strategies available to a senior AFL coach than throwing an extra back. If that’s all they tried, no wonder we got smacked.
You’ve got to have an ability to tighten up on the midfield play, or move an extra back on the rebound, or whatever else, I’m not a coach, but I would think you would have a bunch of different options for different scenarios.
It was probably a usual throw away line that Ross tries to play a straight bat to, but the journo’s were slack to not question ‘was that all you tried?’
There is an argument to keeping it simple, but is it too simple? Or is it he can’t be bothered, or is that all we have from the coaches box? I hope not, there are a bunch of dockerlanders that could do better than that.
This is why there are so many on here that are dark with Ross. When you get smacked like this, you’ve got to open up a bit and plead for a bit of respite. Throwing it back with one-liners and rehearsed responses that we’re all too familiar with, does not provide any confidence that you know why it went so bad, and why it won’t happen again. I never got that impression, and I don’t think the critics got that either. This is why there is some heat coming from the supporters and justifiably so.
