TOPIC: Cerra

What is the club trying to achieve by playing Cerra in the last two games of the season? He is a stand out first year player with 200 games to look forward to. In the last two post match pressers RoLy has indicated that Cerra is fatigued. .... so rest him. He is a young player with a slight body type. Why steer it with the obvious risk of future injuries.
Then again, after yesterday, why would we have to worry about his future. He should already be thinking about greener pastures away from Cockburn.

I think Lyon thought we could win and that’s why he played Cerra. In hindsight, it was a mistake, playing Cerra as well.

I have no problem with him playing.. he wasn’t that bad yesterday.. there is a thing called over-reaching when your training.. you basically almost overtrain.. then have a decent break and get back into it.. it is the fastest way for body to adapt.. he is only 1 week from a break.. he can have a month off and get back into the gym and build his body for next year.. I was happy to hear he is going to move in with his good mates Andy Brayshaw and Hugh Dixon.. it’s the first thing a have heard that tells me he isn’t going anywhere

By my reckoning, we haven’t lost a high (I.e. top 10) draft pick to the “go home” factor since Jeff White in 1997. Somewhat ironically, he was the clubs’ first ever draft pick!

Since that time, Heath Black (#12, 1996) went ‘home’ in 2001 - only to return in 2004.

Leigh Brown (#5, 1999) was traded in 2003 but I don’t believe that was related to home sickness.

I’m quietly confident we will retain Cerra and short of a complete implosion at the club where we sack the entire administration, football department (including coaches) and board (as many on here seems to think will work) - the core of our young group will also stick around.

Oh, and the sun came up again today.

Cerra seems reasonably intelligent, I'm not sure if he's homesick or not but he doesn't appear to be stupid. He played yesterday and he's been around most of this year. Once again, he doesn't appear to be dumb.

Ask yourself, what would you do?

If I was Cerra, and I was playing great footy as a new draftee, and had a player manager who knew what he was doing, I would not sign a contract extension until much later into my contract so that the next contract I signed would be bigger than what it would have been if I signed earlier.

Well, Jason, a few of us think that unless we sack the administration, most of the footy department and coaching box, most of the core of our young players will not be around the club in 2 years time.

I think the bigger picture for Cerra is - if I want to go home, where am I likely to end up??

I can’t see the club capitulating like they did with Jeff White and accept a low ball offer from his destination ‘club of choice’ (we only got pick 21 for the future Melbourne club champion and AA of 2004). Certainly not after the way we dealt with Weller last year.

Cerra is worth a top 3 pick all day so that means if he wants to get to a contending Vic team and not a basket case like Carltank or the Deaf Cheats - those contending clubs will have to trade up to get a pick to satisfy us. Otherwise, off to the draft he goes and into a crap Vic team. Or worse, he goes up to Queensland.

If he is, as it seems, an intelligent young man - he would know this.

We’ve given him a level of games in his first year that he simply would not have got in a top line side.

Davies-Uniake was taken before Cerra and has only played 4 games.

Building a tank on young players takes time - and in particular - game time. You hear it all the time that no amount of training compares to the intensity of an actual game.

In a perfect world Cerra would have been put on ice weeks ago - but we are far from being in a perfect world so they keep pumping games into the kids. If they only improve 1% each game, whether that be through their own development or by learning off other players, that’s worth the short term pain of poor results, IMHO.

This year was always going to be a hard slog and so it’s turned out to be. Should we be putting in the sort of performances of yesterday at this time next year - then that’s a different story altogether.

This is a huge learning curve for Cerra to understand where his body needs to be to play this gig.
It can only do him so much good long term.
Survive another week and he's won his first marathon in AFL and he'll be able to go back home for an extended holiday to think things over before coming back to put things into action for his assault on 2019.

We should be encouraging these young players like Brayshaw and Cerra to stay, not suggesting they should look elsewhere. If we want to improve then we need these young guys who are talented to become part of the future.
Yesterday was a bad bad day but lets not try and destroy the future of the club by suggesting players go elsewhere.

I don't think anyone's suggesting he go elsewhere. Just that he'd be very silly not to be thinking about it.
