I keep saying this but we have to keep him for another year because we don't have the draft picks to replace them. We used them all up.

Anyone we draft has to get a 2 year contract. This way, we can replace them after 1 year.

So expect a massive turnover again next year folks which means our rebuilt rebuild will prevent our first flag in 2020....sorry jezza

I think it's concerning that Peel aren't even going to make the finals. I wasn't expecting a premiership but surely an AFL seconds side should make the finals. It's also a worry that quite often the best players listed are actually WAFL players and not our squad players.
It shows what a lack of depth we've got, how many injury concerns we've had and how many players we've recruited that are actually battling to be average WAFL players.

Running a ponzi scheme usually involves benefiting from duping other people. Lloyd was Morelia the guy who got in a bit too deep with payday loans.

Morgan, it's about taking resources from another source and applying it somewhere else to make performance look good.

Those tree plantation mobs would raise capital for future crops and use the cash to pay investors yields on failing current crops.

Works the same using future years draft picks.

It’s Freo reserves vs Weak coast reserves for the last finals spot next week. Unless Peel win by a few points and somehow Perth can beat Subi.

Be interesting with the talk of a farewell game for DPearce who else they elevate (Dixon, Bennell?) and who they drop.

Bennell went off with calf tightness again so no point in playing him.

Another question, would it be wise to continue the Ponzi scheme one more year. Should we trade next years first, second and third round picks to get something this year? You know, instant gratification?

Rhufus,

you would need to have a specific goal in mind to go down that path and I'm not sure that our list management strategy is that coherent. You would also be looking at a short term gain ie a shot at a flag for that to be sustained for another year.

Add in the expected retirements over the next 2 - 4 years.

In my view we should bite the bullet this year and use our future picks to replace the guys we are going to lose - Neale, Mundy, Hill etc Unless there is a player who we can bring in this year to address those future issues, I would suggest not continuing with living on future picks. We will be needing them when we do start challenging.

Yeti hopefully Neale will be around when we next make finals. I think hes younger than Fyfe? Agree that Barra, Sandi, Ballas and maybe S Hill wont make it.

Rhufus,

Based on age we will need to replace at least 11 players in the next 4 - 5 years.

Ballantyne, Matera, Pearce D, Fyfe, Walters, Bennell, Mundy, Sandi, Hill S, Johnson, Sutcliffe.

Ok that is based on age and these are the over 25s. Fudge that some with blokes who will play past 30 and fudge that back the other way with under 25s now who won't go the same distance.

Now take the between 2 and 3 good picks each year on average that will work out to some degree and that doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room to keep living on future picks.

So, as we are not contending and in the absences of the chance to get the next Pavlich, I think this year we bite bullet and preserve the future picks.

Just my 2c

Edit:

It also highlights the need to better develop the players we do have now and I'm of the view that we haven't done all that well in that area.

I hope we can land a free agent like dalhaus or conca, pick up a gun with our first pick and maybe a couple of mature age or speculative recruits as rookie picks.. we brought in 10 kids last year so it’s not like we need to be adding to much youth.. and by the next year we will have an idea of which one of those 10 aren’t going to make it- delist them and go hard at the draft again

So Yeti, you make some good points albeit somewhat depressing.
If we assume then that those players you listed wont be there in say 5 years time, is it worth trading some of them out right now.
It strikes me looking at Richmond they all look a similar age, all peaking at the right time. We seem to have our timing out.
Which of these could we trade out and get some value for "Ballantyne, Matera, Pearce D, Fyfe, Walters, Bennell, Mundy, Sandi, Hill S, Johnson, Sutcliffe." Not many I would suggest.

Rhufus,

Those with trade value are needed to provide leadership for the youngsters on the team. Most of those won't have any trade value so the point is moot.

Its only depressing if we fail to develop the players we have.

Bringing in specialist ass coaches for skills and development is the way to maximise what we have and Roly should be told he has to work with them
