TOPIC: Our Injuries Are Just Bad Luck

Roly was bemoaning our injury toll on Sunday and was saying how he would love to have had the injury free run that Richmond have had. Wouldn't we all. But why don't we?
Ol' Doc Larkins says there will be a review but are unlikely to find a clear cause. Just put it down to a bad year and hope next year is a better one.
Soft tissue injuries this year for Fyfe, Walters, Hamling, Sandi, Brayshaw, Sutcliffe, Grey, Switkowski, Apeness, S Hiil(5 separate times out).
Other major injuries to Blakely, B Hill, Darcy, Tabener, Dixon, Spurr, Logue

My concern is that this is not a one off season but a regular thing. I remember when posters here were saying it was due to the hard training surface at Freo Oval. Well it obviously hasn't changed since moving to Cockburn and SF didn't suffer the same amount of injuries.
If everything is up for review and people are leaving I hope they have a bloody good look at our fitness and medical team and changes are either made to the personnel or the programme because we are continually hamstrung (pun intended) by the way we are going about things now.

We run too much. Because of our game plan and our poor disposal. We need to be more efficient.

The one injury I am really worried about is Connor Blakely as I understand he's done medial meniscus. Think J Longmuir, Ben Alllan and Clem Michael.

GWS, the Pies, Adelaide to name a few haven’t had a good year either. The nature of the training regime and running game now seems to be producing lots of injuries not just at Freo.

Yes Noddy, but I'm not just talking about this year. It's an ongoing issue. Not sure if other teams have the same issues going back as long as we have.

Every year someone here is always saying if only we had.......insert various names......things would be a lot different.

Page 62 of the West today, the players association are saying too many injuries occurring to players in all clubs and the AFL need to do something about it.

The game has evolved to a point where a high proportion of players can’t play it, which is a shame. I don’t even know if shortening games and the season would help. The game needs to slow down not be a cross between basketball and rugby league.

Maybe our soft tissue just needs to harden up?

Maybe increase the number of allowed rotations so that coaches don't have to leave tired players out there?

Yes I agree they need to increase the number of rotations and/or increase the number of players on the bench. They thought that by decreasing the number of rotations then that will slow the game down... Bollocks. It burns your players out and increases the injury toll.

They limited rotations marginally. The game is still played at high intensity with players operating at 100%. By severely limiting interchange and becoming more endurance based I think would help reduce injury. I don’t know but suspect that long distance runners suffer a lower injury rate than sprinters.
If you compiled a list of players to play over 300 games I would suspect there weren’t too many race horses.

The whole number of games thing won't get solved until next round of TV rights are up for grabs. My understanding is the AFL have a deal for x amount of games a year.

You can add another one to that list of soft tissue injuries. Ryan is out for the rest of the year with a hamstring injury.

Don't have the time or energy but it would be interesting to go back over Roly's time at the club and check our injury count. I can't think of a year when we have had a good run injury wise.

Also Harvey's last year was a shocker.

Getting on a plane every couple of weeks doesn't help. Being Richmond and driving to 17 of your games a year probably helps. Doesn't explain Collingwood's injury run of course.

One thing that would slow the game down a bit and reduce the injury level, would be to pay every free kick that is there. If players don't have to run to stoppages 100 + times a game, and are not getting jumped on and scragged 200+ times a game, the injury rate would reduce. An added benefit is that coaches would instruct players to not scrag and not try to force stoppages, which would make for a much more open and free flowing spectacle.

Is this Fremantle Injury Plague based on evidence or is it just a mythology? How long has it been going on? The actual plague, not the mythology.

I used to check the injury lists every week and didn't see it. Every year one or two potential finalists crash and burn due to injuries, eg, Adelaide. Another few get hit badly. All teams have some significant injuries.

Some see patterns, I see statistics.
