And when you look at WAFL players you overlook mature agers like Banfield and Kelly. Guys like Sutcliffe, Sheridan and maybe even Hughes, Tucker and Duman are not going to get much better than good WAFL players but you have to stop being so damn shortsighted about young talent on our list, especially the big guys who frequently don't mature until about 24 or 25 years old. All we seem to be suggesting is trying to pick up players we overlooked first time around and paying overs for them. Even thinking of trading Darcy or Cox is sheer lunacy and we will never achieve anything with that type of attitude. Get the picks right the first time and develop our own stars. We could have drafted both Mitch and Jeremy McGovern but overlooked them.

I see in the next couple of years Hugh Dixon really coming out of the box. It will be interesting to see how he goes compared to Jarrod Brander. I wouldn't swap him for Brander. Its really early I know, but he might end up being a bit of a find for us.

Agree with most of that Gumnut but if Hogan expressed an interest in coming to Fremantle, you don't turn that down.

What exactly did Hendrix bring DM? Occasionally hinted that he could develop, but didn’t.

I’ll keep Darcy thanks.

What I intended to say, but didn't, was that Lobb could be the ideal replacement for the player Zac Clarke should have developed into. Before he busted his knee. A more mobile, athletic type and a good partner for Darcy.

Lobb would help almost any team because he can be used in a few different roles and he’s tough to match up with. That tends to stretch the defences of other teams. He was at his best in GWS’s already tall forward line.

But his individual output isn’t great.

I think he’s someone you add to a very good team, not the man to help you become one.

Lobb is too inconsistent, but that could change if he were to move home. I would not pay overs on the chance of that.

You need to revise your notion of “overs”. History shows that we struggle to attract free agents. Our price is Melbourne market plus at least a 20% loading for the move interstate and our uncertain outlook (sorry Jezza). Probably 30% loading over a hawthorn or Collingwood.

So we pay that and accept that is the going rate or we develop our own which - especially with talls - takes 3-5 years. Which we don’t have on the 2020 timeline. Which is what confuses me with all the talk about drafting a tall this year.

If we are dinkum about 2020 then we should be trading our first round pick this year for an established Tall forward who is ready to go. Or back in the talls we have drafted over the past few years and put a lot of work into them and draft the best “ready to go” midfielder this draft.

So I would have been giving Dixon every game possible from round 18 on.

Get games into Dixon. Established tall forwards who kick goals tend to be persuaded to stay where they are.

Developing our own talls has never really worked out at Fremantle.

Has buying them in worked out any better over the last 10 years??
