I'll answer my own question above.

I think Clark and Hill from that list are the only W.A players expected to go in the first 25.

""Plus, no-one is really sure how Freo are going to look next season"

I think someone is very sure."

Do you mean Yeti or Raglan Matt?

As you allude to, RR, this discussion is a waste of time until we change the way we play the game. Then we will find out we don't need anywhere near as much as the doomsayers and Kool-aiders think.

To play devil's advocate for one moment, Morgan, may I present an alternative argument in favour of Cerra signing a contract extension this off-season?

Firstly, let's be honest here - contracts mean nothing in the current footy landscape. No sooner had Weller signed a 4 year extension with us, that he decided he wanted to go 'home' to Gold Coast and we have Brayshaw as a result.

As a young man, agreeing to a lengthy (and I would expect very generous) contract extension would only work in his favour - no matter where he intends to play his footy beyond 2019. Any club wanting to take him off us would have to pay at least what we are (probably more) and the longer the contract and higher the wage - the higher the draft pick we could expect back in return.

It would also provide a feel-good story for the club and it's supporters in what has been a pretty trying year otherwise.

It takes all the pressure and focus off the young man heading into his second season (they don't call it the second-year blues for nothing) - who would otherwise be the subject of rumour and innuendo about his playing future for the whole year. Not many players in similar situations recently tend to play their best footy (Fyfe & Dusty as exceptions - but they are both out and out champions of the modern game)

In summary, your honour, there are far more positives than negatives to him signing a contract extension before the start of next season, IMHO.

Before the CamMac saga I probably would have agreed with you. But GWS played that situation very cynically - and ultimately to their own detriment - by not trading him while he had so long left on his contract. It became very easy for them to spin the situation as Cam just looking to make more money.

I generally think signing an extension early makes sense. It gives everyone time for the player to settle into their club, role and career. If someone really wants to get home they usually find a way anyway. But Cerra looks to my eye to be an elite talent, and if he is in two minds about whether to stay, he gives himself much more bargaining power to hold off.

If Cerra wants to go, we trade him. But only for what he is worth. There is no point in trying to keep him if he doesn't want to be here.

None of us really know what is going through Cerra's head (could be factors as Morgan is pointing out) but seems we are more or less agreed that:
(i) We should do what we can to get him to stay;
(ii) We should trade him if he has really made up his mind he wants to leave;
(iii) He is clearly worth a Top 5 pick.

Gerro, don't get me wrong, I hope he stays, and I am confident he will. We have never lost many good footballers over the years through them wanting to leave.

He could quite possibly be very happy being at Freo but just not happy being at Cockburn. Wouldn’t blame him for that.

I'm a bit surprised Luke Meadows from West Perth hasn't been mentioned as a muture age recruit.. Looking through the stats, Ian Hills been really quiet even at Colt's level.. I'm starting to go a bit cold on him.

Can someone explain how "Clarke appears to have overcome his knee worries"? If someone needs to train at WAFL intensity then let them bloody train at WAFL intensity.

I do love the trade debate threads.

Apologies if already mentioned in this thread or others. In order to trade you have to have something worth trading.
In my opinion the only players that have any sort of currency are as follows.

1. Fyfe
2. Blakely
3. Alex Pearce
3. Neale
4. Langdon
5. Hamling
6. Walters
7. Sean Darcy (maybe)

Players that we lose next year,
1. Ballantyne
2. D Pearce
3. Sandi
4. Spurr
5. Johnson

I'd be open to trading Fyfe but it's never going to happen.
Neale, Blakely and Walters are the only other possible options that I can see that have any real value.
Cerra will bring some opportunity should he leave.

My concern now is the amount of experience we're about to lose. Balance is a beautiful thing.

Wizard most of the players Fremantle are about to lose haven’t been playing much this year anyway. It has shown on the field.
