TOPIC: This year's Draft

Just had a look at the Draft order and we have pick 6(first round) and then our next pick in fifth round at pick 78. Where does that leave us come draft time given we seem committed to academy player Jason Carter and pick 78 is worth nothing for the purpose of picking up these players. Does this mean we have to use our pick 6?
Trade period is going to play a major part but I'm not sure who we have of value that we are are prepared to part ways with.
Last year we lost Crozier and turncoat Lachie Weller who we probably would have preferred to keep although I'd take Brayshaw ahead of Judas Weller any day.
The only names that come to mind are Sutcliffe and Tucker but what we would get in return I don't know.
If we get the chance I'd like to see us pick Dillon O'Reilly, talented forward and back, as well as pinch hitting in the ruck. There may be more high profile prospects but this would at least avoid a repeat of the McGovern scenario.
I've got a feeling Trade week will see some interesting and unpopular departures thrown up in order to improve our Draft situation.

We will trade next years second and third round picks for a high first round in this years draft.

Something stupid like that but basically we wont be bring much in this year apart from delisting's and re rookying

I hope you're right because I wouldn't like to lose any of the players who have been mentioned as targets from other clubs. Neale, Langdon and Darcy should be strictly off limits and contracted long term ASAP but I must confess to worrying about Cerra stalling on contract extension talks. I think our current list has immense talent and possibilites if we can keep them all on the park and a finals appearance could come as early as next year.

If we don't have a high enough pick for a King brother or Lukosius given our first pick will likely push out to almost pick 10, I'd like to see us trade down the order to multiple second round picks. The difference between the midfielders and talls available at pick 10 after those big guys are gone and the next 20 players is negligible and we are going to have to replace a number of retirees and delistings.

I can see Ian Hill slipping to around the 20 mark and we could use another small forward. Blokes like O'Reilly could go in the 30's/40's and I'm not sure Carter is on too many recruiters radars atm so could slip even later.

We really have been screwed by our insistence on throwing away second round picks.

And this years draft will be over 2 days. Top 10 at night, the rest the next morning and Rookie in the afternoon.

God help any top 10 prospect who misses out on the Thursday stressing overnight.

Ridiculous.

You seem to follow this stuff more closely than me Biz, but how did we throw away our second round picks? We've used a few on trades - Bennell, B Hill and Hamling - and two of those three trades worked out, and I (and most) thought Bennell was worth a punt.

As I wrote at the time, although the picks are worthy of those players talent, we could have had them much cheaper. Hill had another year on his contract and despite declaring we were rebuilding, we decided to pay top dollar to get him out early rather than pick him up the following year for far less.

Bennell was going nowhere else either with a bad reputation and a desire to head home. Again we decided to pay more than we should have for him.

You have to be smarter with your list management.

I get that Biz, but sometimes if there is a good player that wants to come to Freo, and the price is reasonable, don't you just have to take it. Chances don't always last for ever. For example, wouldn't we still have to trade to get those players back when they are out of contract? B Hill had a career best year for us last year. If that year was with the Hawks, wouldn't that have just added to Hawthorn's asking price? And how much lower than a second round pick were they ever going to go? Same with Hamling. We got him as a back-up at the Bulldogs. If he had cemented his place in the firsts, doesn't that make a trade harder the following year?

As an aside, I see the AFL has introduced draft-night trading. I think that's long overdue.

That's always a risk Morgan, maybe the player won't play all season like Harley and you'll get them for peanuts. The thing with Hill is, even if he had a good year at the Hawks and wasn't just made to look better than he is by our poor play last season, he was out of contract and could just walk for nothing. We would have had pretty close to first pick in the draft and been able to pick him up that way although no club lets players walk these days and the Hawks would have had to relent and take whatever we offered.

I didn't mention the Hamling trade because I thought that one was about market price and we would have struggled to do better in the future.

I would be trying to get pick one by offering Cox and Darcy and our pick 6 to Carlton. It is paying over but i see no other way of ever getting a key forward.

We could get a power forward with pick 2,3,4,5 or 6.
Walsh and Rankine are def Top 3 with Walsh prob going 1 as Carl don't need any more big blokes.
Who knows who will be the better of the King bros or Lukosius??
We will prob end up with pick 8 so only need to get up the order 2 spots..
Giving away Darcy & Cox with pick 6 for pick 1 is absurd..
We need to deal with St K, Bris or GC..
Darcy Tucker and Tommy Sheridan with pick 6 would be much easier to swallow..

The one that springs to mind with trade value is Michael Apeness. As much as I like him I cant see where he fits. I just feel we have an abundance of tall key forwards (not saying all of them are good).

If Taberner, Cox, Dixon (understand he is working out well) and MaCarthy are fit and in form - where does Apeness sit in all of that?

I think you might get an early third rounder for him.

I think he would be sitting in rehab. He seems to have spent most if his time at Freo there Yeti. Plus we just gave him another year on his contract.

Rankine is good but he's no certain top 3 pick. In fact he's borderline top 5 for most draft experts. Considering GC will likely have 2 early picks and are losing a KPF, they will almost certainly take Lukosius leaving the King's to get past Brisbane, St Kilda and the Dogs.

The Blues desperately need Walsh in their midfield so pick 1 is done. I can see GC going for South Aussie Lukosius and a strong bodied mid like Bailey Smith to beef up their midfield. Brisbane have a decent young midfield coming together but could use support for Hipwood and so will pick up one of the King's.

The Saints have a young midfield too and some developing young talls. I'm not sure if they'd go for the x-factor of Rankine or a King but considering they have Max King doing rehab on his knee at their facilities, I would wager he and his brother wouldn't be going past their pick. Even then, there's the Dogs who while having Schache and Boyd, could still use another quality young tall since their midfield is full of developing kids.

As a result, I can't see any of the three falling to Freo and the rest of the kids available don't excite me much, especially when you consider a lot of the next best are academy/FS prospects. Trade down the order and get some more picks to stock up on kids in the second round.
