I would be a supporter of the send of rule for this sort of thing.

The problem with leaving it to coaches is what happens if it is in the finals or a grand final for that matter? In a tight game there is no way a coach will take a player off.

Also if the incident happens after half time or say in the final quarter the the player isn’t being penalised that much to receive a week reduction in a suspension. Particularly if the result of the game is already over due to score differential.

I reckon the umpires should immediately report this type of offence as ‘red card’ and then video footage is reviewed by the off field controlling umpire at the next available quarter time break. If it is blatant and an undeniable offence that would for certain result in a minimum of 4 weeks suspension the player can take no further part.

Good to see AB is going ok. The turgid hand wringing over the mental state of the perpetrator is a media bore.

Is no adult footballer capable of dealing with the results of their destructive actions without people being expected to 'feel' for them?

It's important for society to have a caring side. But it's also important for it to expect people to act like decent human beings to each other in the first place, or expect to feel like shit for actively doing the opposite.

Yeah, I have had a gutsful of how it is mentally tough for that gutless sniper. He was mentally tough enough to king hit Brayshaw, so he should be mentally tough enough to take his medicine. I never heard the media crying for Kickett, B Hall or Solly when they were in similar circumstances.

Another incident supporting some form of red card system at the Essendumb v St Kilda game. That idiot Brown, playing for St Kilda, has just taken out Saad, well off the ball, with a very poorly executed hip 'n shoulder, that looks too much like hurt was intended, toward a key opposition player. The 'Dumb now have to play 3 quarters with one man down, a bloke who's important to their game plan, while the gallumping fool who did the damage is free to cause more mayhem. Shouldn't be so.

DM, if the tribunal were to hang em hi for such incidents instead of a slap on the wrist, we would not even be talking about a red card.

I've watched that a few times, Dockermus and I would hope that wouldn't ever be a red card issue. If so, then you would be expecting a few red cards every round.

Off the ball bump is worth a free kick and he'll be reviewed by the MRO as he caught his head.

Thats nothing like an intentional punch to head and shouldn't be seen in that context

Yeti, I agree with you regarding the severity of a bump versus the coward punch. My point was related to the apparent unfairness of a team once again losing a player to an unwarranted and aggressive act by an opponent, particularly when the action to cause hurt seems intentional. I've seen enough replays now to feel sure that Brown knew exactly what he wanted to do to Saad. This is a part of footy that ought to have been eradicated by now.

Yeah but it was a bump not a punch.

It was off the ball but not by a large margin and it caused an issue because Saad wasn't watching. Anyone getting bumped hard and not being prepared for it would risk a similar outcome, otherwise Saad would have ridden the bump with no ill effects.

Lots of teams lose players to injuries and I just don't see this as an 'unwarranted and aggressive act' it was a bump that was late and off the ball.....anywhere between 0 and 2 weeks

But that is the beauty of Morgan's scheme. Richardson would have to decide to pull Brown off, and have his sentence reduced by a week, or to assume there wasn't much in it and leave him on. The decision is not made by the umpire, but by the St Kilda coach. And if they get it wrong, they (and the player) suffer the consequences.

A useful side effect from this would be that coaches would demand more consistency from Mr Christian. They'd be pretty upset at being made to look stupid..

The vision of the AwFL in taking violence out of footy was to get rid of the king hit behind the play. It has gone through various incarnations since which have seen players like Pav & Johnno give 4 to 6 weeks because opponents ran into their big arses and fell over, Fyfe given a couple because some-one banged against his head while trying to evade a tackle, but so-called "harmless" jumper punches being let off with a fine.

The jumper punches have since escalated to the point where someone tries to push the boundaries by landing a king hit to the jaw and offering the defence that it was a failed attempt at a jumper punch. And the AwFL is now wringing it's collective hands , saying "oh dear we must stamp out violence in footy" and all the know-it-alls are calling again for a red card system which will be exploited and misused just like the jumper punch scenario.

If the AwFL and the media want to rid the game of the king hit behind (or in ) play, they will hand out 20 game suspensions for these rare acts of violence, not as paltry 6-8 weeks which is no more than what a player gets for a raised elbow or punch thrown in the heat of a melee. The media and clubs will desist from asking us to feel sympathy for the thug who has thrown the punch. He is not worthy of sympathy for his action, is not going through just as much pain and anguish as his victim, and actually had a choice in the matter, which his victim did not.

The AFL have pretty much wiped out the king hit behind the play and no one has had to be given 20 weeks to do it.

Pretty much, and eradicated are 2 different things Shane, you can "pretty much" eradicate rabbits, but unless you completely eradicate them, they are not gunna stay pretty much eradicated for long.
