No penalty will ever stop every player with a bad temper from lashing out at someone in the heat of the moment.

Gaff didn't consider the ramifications of his actions until after the event. As soon as he thought about it he regretted what he'd done.

Even if he had thought it through, he didn't eventually choose to throw the because an 8 week penalty is just a bit of a laugh.

No penalty will do that for anything.

But by outlawing any type of punch you will see a change in behaviour. At present you can get away with a punch if it's delivered with a certain level of force to a certain part of the body.

Outlaw the punch and it will result in less king hits as it won't feature as much in a players immediate response.

Less king hits would be zero king hits. King hits behind the play are not common.

This is the problem with the Eagles. They do something wrong and instead of people going 'Andrew Gaff has a temper problem' they make it into this black swan event, completely out of character and unforeseeable, and everyone buys into it and start looking for ways to change the system. If it was a black kid from Nowhereup they would have put the blame on him for being too angry.

The lesson here is that Andrew Gaff needs to stop punching people and the Eagles need to stop defending players who punch people.

I agree with all that.

When I am talking about the prevalence of king punches wasn't just referring to the highest level. Local footy is studded with broken jaws and concussions each season.

We haven't come to terms yet with what a punch is. It's a disgraceful act of violence with dire consequences but if you talk with King or Breteon it's in someway entwined with "masculinity".

The AFL has an opportunity to lead.

Yes, Shane, and we would not have seen the media buy into the poor Gaff phenomenon. While they lionize Gaff, the message goes out that it is naughty to king hit some one behind the play, but if you do, it is ok because we will make sure everyone feels more sorry for you than your victim*, except if you are from anywhereup. Then you will be demonised instead. Just ask Solly, Barry, and Dale.

When Kickett and Solly dished out what they did, Freo supporters were of the opinion that the receivers got their just deserts, but accepted that the players concerned would cop a suspension. No attempts to make out they were angels decended to earth in footy boots, no media beat up on the same score. And we still have Duffield trotting out the same old what happened to Gaff was Freo's fault stemming from the Demo Derby. He put together a highlights package purporting to show how Freo started all the fights. Have a look at it again and judge for yourself who the instigators were. It is the 2nd clip of the article.

* Except for Freo supporters.

Didn't Walters get a week for a jumper punch? Some are punished - it just depends who and where from as usual

Walters's was not a jumper punch, it was a whack to the guts. It was worth a week, but according to the precedents set by the MRP over the last few years, he should have got at worst a fine.

Look back over the years since the video replay came in and consistency from the MRP has vanished. I think that the " Nothing happened your honor, he took a swing at me but it missed" days were a lot more consistent, and for those fellas whose swing didn't miss, they knew that even though they had got off scot free from the tribunal, punishment was coming.

I agree he should have been punished just others aren't and the way the media are going on that the MRP must start acting on these minor ones - they do in some cases was my point. I don't think the guy was hurt in Walters case and Walters did realise just how stupid he'd been in doing it and letting the team down.

I agree with Hypen. Make any punch a minimum of 2 weeks and all punching would stop.
