TOPIC: The Good The Bad & The Ugly

Corporal Agarn The Good The Bad & The Ugly 5 years 8 months ago #1

Corporal Agarn
Now that the incident has been dealt with maybe we can discuss the actual game. In no particular order.....

THE GOOD
i. Bradley Hills best game since return from injury.
ii. Son Son's M.O.Y.
iii. Mundy back in the midfield and just keeps on keeping on
iv. Tabs and Gray back in the side
v. McCarthy and Cox looked a lot better when they are not the lone targets in the forward line.
vi. Johnno/Ryan take down of Gaff

THE BAD
i. the continual poor form of Pearce. Really doesn't deserve a game but we don't have big man options(Kersten?)
ii. Hamling's late withdrawal. Another bloody team calf injury and unlikely to play this week.
iii. Crowden completely unable to step up from recent good WAFL form.
iv. Cerra's form. Has he played a good game since his RS nomination? Is his heart or mind elsewhere?
vi. Tucker. I cannot recall him ever being named in our best. 47 games in and no progress. 11 disposals as a midfielder just isn't enough.

THE UGLY
i. Obvious

IMHO
Your Tucker point is well said CA.
I find him always making bad decisions at bad times, poor kicking under pressure, and without huge speed for a wingman. When I saw him in pre season I thought he had beefed up well and looked set to impose himself on the game-im still waiting!
We need draft picks- I wouldnt be adverse to sending him back to vic for a 3rd or 4th rounder!

Down on down
CA.....Yep totally agree with all your good points.

The bad for me were as follows:
i. Still no apparent game plan
ii. No galvanising of the team after the Brayshaw incident. The Eagles lead was actually greater by the end of the game. Whilst not expecting a win I expected a far more emphatic response on the scoreboard to demonstrate some solidarity.
iii. The shaking of Gaffs hand after the game by multiple Freo players was simply bewildering.
iv.. Agree with you re Cerra, Pearce and Crowden.
v. Matera tried but was still slow and lacks the skills and spatial awareness. Drop him for the rest of the season.

The ugly for me is as follows:
i. That was our 8th 50 + point flogging this season, eclipsing 6 last year and 4 the year before. So much for rebuilding.
ii. They scored 142 points against us. Yes thats right 142. Thats our worst effort defensively this year. Sure Hamling was out but so was Kennedy for them.
iii. I don't buy the clubs stance on KPI's where they state they don't simply measure success on win/loss ratios. What actually are the KPI's because to me we are are going backwards.
iv. Trevor Nisbett is a dead set lying flog.

I find that point on the number of 50pt plus hidings disturbing DOD. That's getting worse, not better.

Don’t underestimate the toll the season has taken on some of the young players. I reckon Cerra is cooked and I’m not convinced Ryan isn’t playing injured/sore. You could also explain A Pearce’s form by reference to fatigue given how much time he had away from the game. Darcy is trying but can’t jump presumably because of his knee.

Corporal Agarn
Okay send Darcy to Subiaco for treatment. They've done better with Zac Clarke than our medicos ever did. And if Pearce needs a rest, give him one. Don't want or need him to break down again. Bring in Kersten.

I get the cooked idea, but it doesn't hold true for all young kids. Raynor is playing better now in a bottom side(Brisbane)than he was early in the season. Maybe they don't play Rolyball as much there though.

There are exceptions CA but I do think younger guys will need a break. AB, despite his size, may have been an exception as he was going fine. Cerra, definitely off over last few weeks, a break won’t hurt. My gut be tempted to keep him in if ladder position meant something, from here I doesn’t.

Rayner has played as a forward all year - big difference.

Bit harsh getting stuck into Pearce. I think having Hamling out unbalanced the backline, which was under siege.

Agreed Noddy. I'm sure that Hamling would say that he's very happy having Pearce next to him in the backline.

I think Pearce is great but if you think his form in the last few weeks has been good, you've got blinkers on. Nothing wrong with resting him. As I said we don't want to run the risk of him breaking down again.

It's well demonstrated that young teams have up and down performances and they weaken towards the end of the season. I understand there might not be much emotional relief left for some Fremantle supporters apart from slagging their own team but really this is normal.

We've looked cooked for a couple of weeks. I was hoping the bye would help freshen up the team, but it sounded like they got flogged on the track, which seems like a strange call to me. Our best players in the last few weeks have been our veterans. That's partly because of their quality, but I think it's also because they have the reps in their legs. I think a few young lads will be looking forward to the end of the season. Cerra, for example, looks spent.

Tabs and Cox looked likely - but just off - for most of the game. They also appeared to be too close to each other. I know the coaches get credit/blamed for everything to do with structure, but surely these two should know that being within 5m of each other plays into the opposition's hands. Perhaps that understanding comes from more time playing together (how many games would they have played in tandem?), but still. It was a bit amateur.

Grey played exactly how I remembered him playing. He was lively, without getting it heaps, and when he had a chance to hit the scoreboard he let himself down with his execution. He's like a less-useful Chris Mayne. Still, he was by no means our worst, and I hope he gets an extended run to see if he can build on his game.

Not sure if this is the appropriate thread to raise this issue but here goes anyway.

One of the key criticisms against RL is his supposedly taxing ‘Roly-ball’ style of play. That is, get numbers around the contest, apply extreme pressure to create a turnover and then spread & flood forward to capitalise. Perhaps a few tweaks to that but back when we were contending between 2012-15, that’s my recollection of our game style.

But what I’m seeing now in the competition heavy weights is something remarkably similiar - especially Richmond.

So is it less of a case of the type of footy that teams play or is it more the case that style of footy is easier to maintain across a long season when you only have to travel interstate 5-6 times a year?

Looking at Richmond’s travel record this season I think there is quite the argument the latter has more do with sustaining that style of play than the former.

Of course player fitness levels, years of experience, injuries to key players and a thousand other variables come into play.

But I just wonder if we ever get a genuine ‘national’ competition where the travel factor across all clubs is equalised such that all teams travel roughly the same amount each year - that these taxing styles of play will not be sustainable for anyone?

Just a thought...
