TOPIC: Consistency

Struggle with defending Christian, his decisions this year are beyond comprehension and wildly inconsistent. I no longer bother to look at each incident and form an opinion on the outcome as I don’t know what criteria will be applied this week.

I never thought Nyhuis's tackle was a sling tackle. Not only that but he rolled him even though his own feet were off the ground. Maybe the rule should be not to seriously hurt people which would be fair enough but even then some people just get tangled up in the legs and lose control.

I think that is the rule Larkin.
This was apparent the other week when the Hawk copped three weeks for his trip. The only reason he got three weeks was because the player tripped broke his leg. I have watched this incident on multiple occasions and each time I watch it I only see a player instinctively trying to obstruct an opponent. At no point in time can you convince me that this player ever had the time to engage his brain and make a choice around his action. He was playing in real time with the expectations that he be competitive.
If this player had prior history of similar incidents then maybe he needs to be taught to not do this but I haven’t seen any evidence of this.

It’s one thing to say that Parfitt was lucky (he was), that the one-man MRO system is flawed (it is), or that Christian is a dope (he is); it’s quite another to say Pafitt’s tackle was the same - or worse - than Nyhius’ tackle.

If you’re unsure how reckless / dirty a tackle is, watch the players’ reactions. A borderline sling tackle gets you an appeal to the umpire, a really bad tackle gets a more vigorous response from he tacklee’s teammates.

Half of the Port team wanted to fight Nyhuis. That should give you and indication of what they thought of the tackle.

Action = Guilt
Consequence = Penalty

He was found guilty but he got up straight away. Should have been a week. But the Nyhuis decision was sound.

There was a up to a dozen Nyhuis tackles made in this weekend games. One NicNat also. The players rose up dazed some helped by med staff. but deemed by comments thats its part off this close exciting great game.
Richo was concerned on a couple on Fridays night, but because there's always has been intense rivalry between the clubs makes it OK.

The fact that half of Port wanted to fight Nyhuis, (including Dixon who took a kick at him which went unscrutinised) and Richmond let it go may say more about the state of the games and the attitude of the players than the severity of the tackles.

It also says something about Grey’s state - as in, he was prone, two meters over the boundary line. unconscious for a long time.

Morgan, I have a problem with this "unconscious for a long time" business. If Gray was that badly hurt, there is no way he would have been fit enough to play the next week, let alone be in good enough shape to be in the best players.

ust because some one is more prone to concussion than another does not means that the person douing the tackling should be penalised on the injury incurred rather than the tackle itself.
It is just media hype, they see the result and want blood, if Robbie Grey had not been knocked out there would not have been the cry for blood.

I've used this analogy before, but think of dangerous driving as an analogy for sling tackles. Not many of us go out onto the roads with the intention of driving unsafely or injuring someone. But from time to time, either through carelessness, reckless disregard, or bad technique, people do dumb things on the roads - like run a red light, or overtake in a bad spot.

If you hurt someone doing those things then you will get a severe penalty. Sure you could say 'people run red lights all the time and don't get penalised' or 'if the other person had a better car they wouldn't have been so badly injured', but it misses the point. You can't put everyone in gaol for running a red light, and you can't let people who run a red light and hurt someone get off scot-free as if no-one was impacted.

In life, consequences matter. Sure, it's unlucky sometimes, but that's how life goes. You shouldn't put yourself in the position to hurt someone and get in trouble, but if you do, and no-one gets hurt, you should thank your lucky stars.

Nyhius knocked out a bloke for 45 seconds and he couldn't finish the match. Sure, he played the next week - some people bounce back in a few days, and some take a few weeks. Some get so many knocks they never really bounce back. Some, suffering from CTE, are never the same person. At the extremes, some take their own lives.

If a tackle is careless and someone is knocked out, someone is going to be rubbed out. If the person gets up and plays on, there probably won't be a penalty. You might as well make peace with it, because I can't see it changing any time soon, andI'm not sure it should.

Well, to use your analogies.
Not everyone drink driving kills or badly hurts another person. Does that mean that if no-one is hurt they get a slap on the wrist and get told not to do it again?

It is against the law to drive through a red light. Every one who gets caught doing so gets punished.
It is against the laws of footy to sling tackle someone. NOT everyone who gets caught doing it gets punished.
Why is this so???

Morgan, that is bordering on the absurd.

It wasn't a sling tackle, so lets just remove that from your argument.

Grey contributed to the result by trying to kick the ball away and avoid the HTB decision.

To state 'Nyhuis knocked a bloke out for 45 seconds' is borderline slanderous. Nyhuis executed a very strong tackle. Grey made no effort to cushion the fall because he was trying to kick the ball away. To state the 'Nyhuis knocked a bloke out for 45 seconds' speaks indirectly of intent and completely ignores Grey's role.

The same action, with Grey not lifting his feet and cushioning his own fall would have seen Nyhuis win a free and no suspension. Similar tackles this season have not resulted in 3 week suspensions. Be contrary all you want but the inconsistencies are obvious.

Pontificating on the effects of head injuries is a spurious argument. Nyhuis is responsible for 'only' his actions, not Grey's.
