It is conceptually a good award, but it has become ridiculously contrived in execution. Done properly - based on a stand-out display by a qualifying player during the week in question, ideally in a win - it would be a good, regular feature of the AFL newsfeed, because I suspect fans of all clubs are generally able to celebrate the performances of young players across the league (although I am naturally opposed to the idea that someone called Tom Cole who plays for West Coast can be any good, he has not been around long enough to have reached Elliot Yeo level yet). Instead the award has become a farce, based apparently on some myth of an acculumation of effort in combination with the unspoken criteria of who hasn't been nominated yet. The fact that you actually have to go looking for news of the weekly announcement on the AFL website says a fair bit about what the award has become.
That said, I would have been annoyed if anyone from our team was nominated for anything associated with Sunday's abject performance. Andrew Brayshaw should have been nominated when we beat Carlton in Round 13.
