Well when one of your forwards is actually a ruckman who is slower than Sandi with a Queen Mary turning circle and the other is completely out of form I reckon any backman is likely to do better.

I had a whole post about how our defenders would towel up our forwards (even with the roles reversed) and most decided that it was moot point because of our coach.

Today we plonked a few defenders in the forward 50 in the last quarter and they actually looked like kicking a few when our forwards didn’t all game.

It’s such a small sample as to be easily disregarded (and the heat had gone out of the game), but our backline is so much more talented than our forwards they can play a completely different role and show them up.

4 contested marks for the game, none (from memory) in the forward 50. That’s an indictment.

I don't agree with any of that. Hawthorn 'looked' like they had better players because they were better organised, better prepared and better developed by a coach that is much better at all of those things.

We looked worse than we are for the same reasons reversed.

We have better players than we looked to have today...and its not all Giro's fault, trust me.

I just wish Cox would firstly try harder and secondly show a little emotion when things don't work out. He is so far from being any sort of forward that his replacement may not be born yet. We were rabble, but ten so were the Eagles- witches hats the lot of them!

The last three weeks have been a pretty good sample of a lower-ladder team at this part of the season.

We jumped a top 4 team who weren’t switched on. Hung around away against an average team who missed their chances. Got pummeled by a team fighting for the eight who had the look of a team that clicked.

Two weeks ago the Hawks lost at their fortress/hovel in Launceston. Sometimes you don’t know what you’re going to get. I thought we were a sneaky chance today. We weren’t.

I don’t know morgan. I would agree with you if the pattern was only a few years old but our losses to Hawthorn are starting to span generations. It’s humiliating but unfortunately only the fans seem to feel it.

What's worrying is one pick in the first 80 for this draft coming up. So we are kind of stuck with this team.

Maybe they're just knackered, I don't know. A few of them lately have not looked like AFL level players.

its a terrible state of affairs when Jones is within say our best 12 players as even Langdon said on 6pr after the game " he is not up to it" but I have to admit he gave an effort but the days of having a slow moving ruckman in the forward line are gone
Every other coach in the afl but Roly knows that(did the hawks have two), why didnt he at least rotate his ruckman off the bench and say create havoc and doubt by playing son son as the full forward out of the square ie one out nobody else within 40 metres (clarkson wouldnt have suspected that) Lyon is a dud but dont think Steve or Bond would have the nerve or courage to dismiss him, let alone look at their own performance
After another two yrs of Lyon with his ULTRA NEGATIVE GAME PLAN we will be down to say 10000/ 15000 members and lucky to have a club , does anyone have the courage to save us ie come on Belly you are smart please lead a challenge to our non descript president and ego embracing ceo

I agree hypen. In particular Cox, Darcy, Giro, Jones, Sheridan and Tucker have been disappointing. I am not saying they won’t make it, or improve, but they are not up to the level at the moment but are getting games because the cupboard is bare. Cox in particular seems to completely disappear and I am not convinced he is good enough at this level.

Time will tell but it is very hard to tell where our club is at. They try, I will give them that, but the class difference between freo and other clubs is massive.

I don't think its all down to one factor. Its been a long and fair to say unsuccessful season. I'll take that one step further, its been yet another unsuccessful season following others of a similar nature. Its a young playing group but thats a minor additional factor.

Long, difficult, unsuccessful seasons magnify the aches, pains and gripes that come with playing elite sports. Players react by responding more to the gripes than they would otherwise do if they were feeling upbeat and enthusiastic. Right now, theres little to fight for and less to enthuse over. They are playing out the end of a dead season right now.

You won't be seeing them at their best because their best isn't there to see.

Bring back hope, bring back realistic goals, bring back some fun and you'll see players that belong at the this level. Without change, they won't look much better than they do now and thats not all down to them
