An umpire could have legitimately called that a throw and awarded a free kick against. The AFL umpiring department would have, with earnestness and straight face, explained why the umpire would have been correct.
In this case, given that it will be the goal of the year they will, with due earnestness and straight face, explain why it wasn't a throw.
Its all to do with the marketing.
Which is why, in due course, the playing time per quarter will be shorter to enable commercial broadcasters to control the total duration of their broadcasts without sacrificing advertising time. That said, shorter quarters v Hawthorn might have been a blessing!

What sort of tool would he have looked like if he kicked an airy? And everyone would have said it was a throw anyhow.

In the rules (and I know we are trying to avoid them in this discussion), throwing the ball is about disposal. So was this a disposal, and therefore possibly a throw? I think not.

Is it unlawful to run juggling the ball to yourself? Probably not, providing you don't run more than 15m without a bounce.

If you were running along and threw it over an opposing player then caught it yourself (or booted it out of the air), that's a throw.

McPharlin's normal kicking action looked to me like he threw the ball in front of himself then kicked it out of the air. It looked odd but worked for him (statistically).

To me, this was a 100% legit kick. As is kicking the ball when you've been tackled to the ground or slipped over, which requires lifting it a bit. When players start throwing it 8 metres, running around a few blokes, then kicking it out of the air I'll think again. But that might be ok too - if you miss the ball, it was a throw. Or not ok, but cool.

If he had of been tackled while doing it, illegal disposal, but seeings as he kicked it, I don't think you can ping him. Different if he threw it up for a teammate to kick.
