Forgetting the rules for a second, what a goal! Why wouldn't you want that to be a scoring shot?

From a technical point of view was he just getting the ball to his foot? If he hadn't connected with his foot then throw.......

To the untrained eye, it looked like he released the ball and before the ball hit the ground, he kicked it with his foot.
To the trained eye, it was the same thing but they needed a few hours to process what happened.

If I throw the ball over an opponent and run past him to collect it, it’s a throw. If it is a goal post instead of an opponent it’s the same thing.

No that wasn’t a throw. The ball travelled from ball to foot.
From memory, Higgins released the ball on one side of the post then collected it on the other side, before he put it on the boot. If that is correct?? the thing that made it look ok was that it didn’t travel very far to get around the goal post but where do we draw the line. If it was a metre throw would that be ok?

I think its one of those events that comes down to the intent of the player. In both cases I reckon its clear the player was intending to kick the ball and not (illegally) move the ball away from himself or to another player. So I reckon they're both all good.

I appreciate the irony that such a determination of a player's intent requires psychic umpires who struggle to deal with the rules we presently have while we live in an era of possibly tinkering with the rules on a week by week basis.
