TOPIC: Jeremy McGovern - re-signed with eagles

Yep but given our (non) position in this years draft we will have to pay overs to get anyone any good or trade back in somehow.
I don’t think we will do too much in this years trade period (we don’t have much of value except possibly Cerra) but will have a real go next year.

I don't get this knocking McGovern thing. There is no way in the world that if we had have picked him up a few years ago when we could have and should have we wouldn't want to be keeping him now.

He's the best in the business at what he does, plus he's more than capable of going forward and kicking goals and pinch hitting in the ruck.

To say that he only plays well against sides that bomb the ball in doesn't cut it either for me. I can't think of too many backman that look that good when a side delivers the ball precisely and accurately to their forwards. Plus the slime have only lost four? games this year so don't think he could have played that badly that often.

I also personally don't like the fat boy type slurs. He doesn't look like the normal kpi, skin fold type AFL player but there's not a club in the AFL that wouldn't want him in their side, including us.

The problem is that while I agree that we wouldn't want to pay him that much now, good luck to him and as I said I wish we had have got him earlier when people even on here were talking about his marking ability at Claremont.

CA,

you miss the point of what people are saying. He's not crap but he's just not worth 1.2 a year for what he does. As an intercept marker, he's very good but so is Luke Ryan when he's used effectively.

Others may have a different view but I don't think you can judge a players salary by the number of games won and lost. The slime have another good intercept marker and head basher in Hurn so its not all down to McGovern to fill that role. They also have more umpires than we do.

Either way, to me, he's worth about 600 per year so I'm glad the slime are playing overs.

Yes, I did say Yeti that I'm glad we didn't pay that for him, but also said i wish we did get him when we should have.

The deal, assuming the reported figures have some accuracy to them, means that McGovern is going to be paid about three times the average player salary through until the end of the current CBA, with the final year of the deal occurring in the next collective agreement. I am no fan of the Slime, but McGovern is easily three times better than the average AFL player. Funnily enough on the weekend just gone he played his 95th game - one more than twice as many games as every single player we picked in his draft year ever played, combined.

CA, Joel Hamling and Alex Pearce are quite effective when preventing a key forward marking the ball on the lead or as effective as you can get.

Of course he's a good player, indisputable. But I reckon as it stands from a list management angle. Key tall backs are the only thing we have bedded down.

He'd be chasing key forwards on a lead all day playing for us. Not zoning off for rushed kicks forward.

No doubt he's a good player but a lot of opposition (including us!) play in to his hands - literally - by kicking it to where he is. The "intercept marks" he often gets are just gifts from the opposition. Our defence is our only real strength, we didn't need McGovern and certainly not at $1.2m/yr

He also has a coach that sets the team up to play to his strengths. I've heard some coaches don't always do that sort of thing.

We only kicking to McG because the player with the ball is squeezed. This is more of a general skill level problem producing a forward bomb under pressure. Reliable delivery to intermediate targets is the solution but to do this you need to be doing other things right. Some of you might find this very hard to believe but kick it to McG is not going to be written into the game plan.

He's only not worth that money if we get another player who is as good as he is for the same amount or less, if you know what I mean. And it doesn't seem that anybody that good wants to come here judging by our unsuccessful wooing of several guns over the past three years.

Play someone like Darcy, Sandi or Jones on McGovern next derby and see how good he is. My pick would be Darcy, contest in the air and if he doesn't mark it , he will win it on the ground.
