I reckon that's ok money for years 1-3 of his contract, but I wouldn't want to be paying a 31 year old McGovern a million bucks a year. He's one pre-season injury or a few too many HJs in-store appearances away from being a salary cap killer.

Good on him though. To go from the rookie list to that contract is quite an achievement.

In all seriousness it is better for the competition overall when good players remain with their clubs (even clubs like the Slime). It's hard to say whether a five-year deal is a good idea, but it can certainly be said that it will always remain disappointing that we didn't roll the dice on him back with one of the seven picks (we took six players who combined to play 47 games - and Nick Lower played 22 of them) we had before they drafted him in the 2011 rookie draft (all the more so if there is any truth to those rumours about his old man failing to persuade his ex-club to do so).

The opening line of McGovern's statement made me laugh though:

"I’m grateful for the opportunity the club has given me and it was a gut decision to extend my contract."

Do you reckon he's ever applied a different decision-making technique?

In all seriousness, the management at Dooker control must look at it self and ask why we couldn't get this bloke. I would say that it puts the ruler through any chance of getting his brother also. Our chances of picking up quality and proven players under the current regime is remote in my opinion. The club will have truckloads of cash but nothing to spend it on.

Freo weren’t the only club to miss out on him but sometimes it pays to draft pure footballers and not get obsessed with the 17 year old thing, or to fall for whatever is fashionable at the time. As Shane pointed out a while ago that’s how you end up with players like Sheridan. Banfield is another example of a decent player making the step up straight away.

The salary cap squeeze never hits big clubs like West Coast as hard as it does lesser clubs not just because they seem to be always on the verge of success but they get promised that they will be looked after when footy finishes.
