Interesting to see a player speak out about umpires having favourites, but must say that I agree withe Bernie Vince about the way Dangerfield gets treated differently to most players.
Also note that knobber Selwood applauding.

Yeah, but the umpires made the right call according to the rules. Brayshaw heard Dangerfield nominate then blocked him. dumb play by him, but I do agree the rule needs to go. All the umps need to do is pay that free kick when a ruckman is interfered with, don't need a player to nominate. If the umpire cant work it out for himself , he should not be umpiring. And if the resultant shortage of umpires takes us back to 2 umpires, that might be a win/win situation. In my opinion we don't have 27 Top level umpires anyway.

I would have thought that even without the ruck nomination it’s a free kick. Brayshaw isn’t focused on the ball, is a long way from the ball and is impeding Dangerfield’s run at the footy.

Nominating rucks is stupid. That clip shows all that I dislike about the Cats, Dangerfield and Selwood. Dangerfield wouldn’t have been impeded if he had spent more time trying to avoid Brayshaw rather than flapping his arms around and exaggerating the impadiment that Brayshaw was offering.
Selwood clapping like that is typical, I would suspend them both they are dicks.

Dangerfield would say that he exploited the rule. I’n not of fan of people who use that as an excuse. An umpires job is tough enough without players trying make life even more difficult.

And, yes, the nomination rule is a dud.

I disagree with the need for nomination; but I agree that only 2 blokes should be involved in the ruck contest.
Always thought 'a third man up' was a bit dangerous / unfair to ruckman. Its fair and reasonable that they be allowed to focus their skills & momentum on one opponent rather than having another climb all over them from a different angle.

But nominating is stupid.

Leave it to the teams to show adherence and logicality to the rule, and if a 3rd man goes up, well blow the whistle and penalise that team.

Its simple! Theres no need for nomination.

That's too obvious and simple an idea, Cletus. You know it'll never happen.
For what it's worth, I thought Dangermouse chose to run into Brayshaw and just about had his arms in the air before making contact. It had a pre-planned look about it. I thought that was why Selwood was applauding.

Cletus, a lot of the rule changes of the last 30 years would not have been necessary if umpires had blown their whistles and paid the frees according to the rules of the day.

I'd like to see them introduce a rule which gave the umpires discretion not to pay a free kick if a player is being a knobber.

The AFL should be encouraging players and coaches to play in the spirit of the game. The spirit being that a lot of people spent their money on a ticket to see two teams compete to see who can play football better. They didn't come to see Dangerfield goating around for free kicks or players ducking or rushing behinds to take time off the clock or bloody David Warner handing out sandpaper.

Personally I’d love for Danger to try that again and a ruckman put a huge knee through his sternum in the ruck contest. I doubt he’d do it again.

The third man up was always a bit dangerous, and we saw Sandi get rubbed out trying to protect himself in a pre-season game. I think the nominaction thing is dumb. Just have two ‘Ruckman’ armbands. You can’t contest a ruck contest unless you’re wearing one, and if both are at the contest it’s a free kick against.

Jeez Shane, bit harsh blaming Davey for the problems in the AFL umpiring department. He's probably never heard of AFL.

Sounds good in theory Morgan, the only problem I see with that is Dangerfield only contests the ruck when he knows he will be blocked from getting to the contest. Might need a big-bodied mid-fielder to do the knee job on him, any-one know where there is a surplus of those?

I like your thinking, Shane. Properly applied on Saturday night, The Knobber Rule would have resulted in a free kick against Dangermouse, followed by a 50m penalty against Selwood for his applause. That would work.

I think I've mentioned before that part of the umpire or MRO review should be a review of general shithousery by players. The problem with the current system is that any one example of shithousery (eg, staging or generally being a dick) is that it's never on its own sufficient to justify a fine or suspension, but there is no mechanism to track accumulated shithousery, so players are basically able to act like knobs without any consequences. I reckon there should be a points system, so that, say, when you reach 100 points you miss a game. I reckon I'd give Dangerfield 10 points here for this cynical effort to bring the game into disrepute, and Selwood 20 points for clapping like knobber.
