It's interesting how people see what they want in the pressers. I thought Lyon saw the game the same way we did including lamenting we 'lived down the line a bit and turned it over'.

Lyon was clearly annoyed about the way his Johnson comments were represented last week, and I don't blame him. Anyone who watched yesterday's press conference and saw the way Lyon's eyes lit up when he talked about Johnson can see how much affection he has for him. Anyone who watched Johnno play the game like a guy who couldn't bend down to tie his own shoelaces knows he's not playing next year. I think Lyon was burned by his comments, and so he's a little more circumspect now about questions relating to players who may be on the way out.

Random thoughts on the game: I thought it was a decent effort yesterday. It's clear to me that Walters should be the person kicking it into the forward 50 as often as possible. He didn't have much quality to kick to yesterday, but still found blokes when they were in space. B Hill makes a huge different moving the ball forward. We got smashed in the middle, and they did a good job controlling that part of the ground and pushing us wide. Neale's hands were so clean, it's easy to take him for granted. I like Duman a lot. Hughes less so, and I can't see him sticking around with Nyhius, Duman and Logue likely to be playing for the same spot next year. A Pearce is a gem, and Hamling not far behind. Wilson's dash and kicking is so important. Jones looks like a handy back-up of years to come (but I'm not sure much more). Mundy made some baffling decisions yesterday - we should remember when we judge the younger players that even the best and most experience players have some clangers.

I thought it was a great effort. No club has eight of their best out and plays that well. But we just have to do something about the fact eight of our best always seem to be out.

While he is not the same type of player as Griffin, if Jones can be our second ruckman when the top guy (Sandi/Darci) goes down or is suspended, we will get value out of him. If the game goes back (through rule changes or coaching changes, it will be forced on the game) to a more open, long kicking, positional type of game, then a player like Jones will come into his own as sides play 2 permanent ruckman.

Agree and disagree with you Hypen.

Every year our go to excuse or reason is that we have so many good players injured. Other sides seem to have periods during the year when they have a bad injury run but they manage to still perform a lot better than we do.

Do we just notice our injury list more than other clubs though or do we really have continued injury concerns each year?
And if so why? Is it something to do with our training programme? Are our fitness team below par?

But the other side of that is that even when we have had close to our best side on the field we still get beaten and quite often, convincingly.

Alright, the no excuses version for you CA.
At the start of the season we played better than Essendon and won. Yesterday we played worse than Essendon and lost.
Unless you count saying "we played worse than Essendon" as an excuse, that is.

Thank Rog, but how do you work out that we got smashed by Port at the start of the year when we were at basically full strength and then beat them last week when we had big names out? The defeat at home by NM when we okay injury wise and I still find the Brisbane debacle hard to understand?

I'm with you though. I think if we kick a bigger score than the opposition for the rest of the season we will win more than we lose.

What don't some people get?
We have a very very young squad with not many real ‘leaders’ available on game days, Mundy can’t be everywhere at once. On any given day as has been shown if you have critical injuries before or on game day before or during the match you are likely to struggle. Results over the year and last two weeks have proven that, Lions beat us, we beat Port, Lions beat Hawks in Tassie, Suns beat Swans in Sydney, Crows barely beat Lions etc.

Making up stuff that the coach may or may not have done to justify why we played poorly is grasping at straws. Just look at some of the decisions made by individuals on the ground to see why a side that loses does so.

Which, Noddy, goes back to the coaches box and selection committee. Those players are either following instructions by making those decisions , in which case it is flawed tactics and strategy, or going against the coaching instructions, in which case the coach should not be selecting them week after week.
