A red card worries me, if introduced I think the only way it should be applied should be for blatant thuggery such as Barry Hall incident.
I disagree on the Gray concussion influencing the outcome of the game. It may have, it is a very subjective call. Watching the game I was more concerned that it may have acted as a spark to get Port going and arrest the momentum we had at the time.

On the surface it's about Nyhuis but it actually goes back to the combined Fremantle v Perth game in 1886 when Frank Snoo was given a 12 week ban for punching the Perth captain, who's brother sat on the tribunal. The complaint was that he struck him with a left hook, ignoring the fact that Snoo had lost his left arm to a combine harvester over the off season.

Presumably he was too concussed, or perhaps his depth perception was iffy after they removed the eye, to notice that it was actually a right hook - but the point stands that it was a set up.

There is the odd dodgy decision, but this was about right. I would definitely have wanted a few weeks off for any player that did that to Walters. And yes, the odd dodgy decision just happens to look as though someone at AFL House gave orders. But even though I'm as prone as anyone to conspiracy theories, I don't see the point in this case.
And lets give the AFL some credit - for the last 2 weeks the slime umpires have been ok.

No I don't have a scrapbook, Morgan just limited recall. What I do want to see is consistency in the suspensions handed down however and in my opinion we are not seeing that. I have cited the incidents involving Freo players, because we are Freo supporters, but have said that we are not the only ones copping it. And no I don't think it is a conspiracy, I think it is incompetence.

Can someone who says Nyhuis deserved what he got tell us how he could have done what he did better?

Then how it would be possible physically, mentally or ecumenically.

Isn't this the point of a penalty system? Discourage doing something one way and encourage it be done another.

Gray being KO'd was bad luck and a result of him trying to break the tackle for an extended period of time, there's a reason the umpire originally viewed it as holding the ball. Getting 3 weeks for a very unlucky outcome Nyhuis couldn't have realistically predicted is a poor result of a horrible system.

I have no doubt Nyhuis is repentant and never wanted to injure Gray but when a player is trying to break out of a tackle and dispose of the ball, you're taught to try and turn him so he can't kick it. He didn't pin both arms with Gray's right arm free to dispose of the footy and after that, protect himself in the fall. Nyhuis should not be held responsible for Gray's failings to do that. Nyhuis didn't lift him or force Gray's head into the ground and shouldn't be penalised 3 weeks for it.

I think if Nyhuis had have dropped his knees and brought Gray to the ground that way there would have been no problem. The technique Nyhuis used had greater chance of causing head damage and that is what the AFL is trying to get rid of or at least minimise greatly.

It’s unfortunate but the way the rules read now and are interpreted now, Nyhuis could easily have been given a greater penalty.

Technique schmechnique. Watch it properly. Dropping is what he did. Maybe not with a bent knee but there was sideways momentum - as much from Robbie Gray being a good balance player that doesn’t lose his feet and go to ground easily as anything else. I maintain that the only way to have 100% prevented the outcome would be not tackle at all. If this has to be the conscious thought of every player in every similar contest, then we’re not playing footy no more.

How many tackles do you reckon were made last weekend in total?

And one was deemed dangerous enough for a suspension... suggests to me that while there are issues around definitions at times essentially the game is going alright without being threatened by banning tackling.


There’s no conspiracy here. There’s no radical injustice being practised st Freo’s expense. It was an unfortunate incident where one of our players put himself in a position that resulted in a suspension. That’s all.

That's the problem Guy, that tackle is perfectly fine in all those other situations but in this unfortunate incident, all of a sudden the tackler cops a long suspension. The tackle was not any different to dozens in the same round but due to an accident, a player was injured. Injuries happen though and there are mitigating controls to stop that but you can't guarantee perfect safety in a contact sport.

Nyhuis did everything within the rules, he tackled around the waist and not above the shoulders. He didn't pin the players arms. He didn't lift him off the ground. He didn't land in his back. He did everything you would expect of a good tackle. Gray lost his balance as he tried to dispose of the footy and didn't try to protect himself from the fall and Nyhuis cops an extended stint on the sideline. It's wrong.

The same people that argue Nyhuis deserves 3 weeks or more on this forum are the ones who said Buddy did nothing wrong when he elbowed Hamling in the head. Both actions had the potential for serious injury, but only 1 deserves suspension. I don't get it.
