Not sure what’s behind his form slump but given his form in the wafl you’d have to think his return was a bit premature. Hope he can get it together this year to give cox some support aft apeness is now gone for the year.

He was playing the third forward role yesterday, and struggled. Given we only ever play 2 and rarely 3 forwards, I cannot see where he will fit in.

McCarthy has shown in the past that he has the ability to play well at this level. He obviously has a major issues with confidence and self-doubt. Since football is played (quote) '90% above the shoulders' his mental state for whatever reason is severely hindering his performance. Not being a psychologist I hesitate to offer advice. This lad has ability which at present he cannot harness. It's not physical it's mental. I suppose one could ask the question - does he really in his heart at this moment want to play professional AFL football?

He doesn't time his leads properly, he goes too early. I couldn't work out whether he was playing a decoy role at times or whether he was just lost. He does get lost.

He goes to ground too quickly, a sure sign his belief is shot. The worst thing is his team mates seem to have lost belief in him too.

Was hoping 17 blokes got around him when he kicked that goal.

My biggest concern with Cam has always been his timing. In the Gold Coast game he actually attacked a couple of marking contests aggressively and was the best I have seen him play. After he kicked the goal yesterday he then had a similar contest shortly after. Hopefully this is a confidence thing and he can start to bring this regularly.
If this is a confidence thing, then he has a problem because this aspect is the one part of the game you should be able to put up each week in spite of form.

I think Cam could be a really good forward and I want him to get there. So whatever the club can do to help him should be done - in the 22, in the magoos or tripping around Europe for a bit - it doesn't matter to me. I'll never say a bad thing about him, he's one of my favourites and he needs some help.

Good on him for kicking that goal yesterday. It wasn't an easy shot and he executed it perfectly. He's no basket case that misses from the edge of the box, we needed that major and he delivered.

Yeah I’m with you Polly. I want him to do well - went through a lot to get back and play for the Dockers. I want him enjoying his footy and doing well.
My worry is that I was happier to see the ball go through the bigs than he seemed to be.

To me he just does not appear fit enough to play Roly's game style.
That does mean he is unfit just not fit enough for Rolly.
Given that - he needs to get stronger , and simply leaner to increase his pace.

Hopefully another tailored training regime in the off season may help. That is assuming he is prepared to do the fanatical gym work required to get there.

I think that is where the question mark is with him. Does he have the necessary hunger to get himself physically elite at training.

If I was to predict I would say no , given that he appears so out of shape. Anyhow upto him.

To me he's an enigma. When he has the ball, I always think something good is about to happen. When he doesn't have the ball, I always think he's no chance to get it.

I hope he gets there, but I have no idea what the club needs to do to help him. Some players can have their confidence shot by continually underperforming at the top level, and others wither away in the ressies with lesser talent around them to elevate their game. I just don't know with Cam.

I still think he'd be a good player for us in a good team. But what to do with him until then I just don't know.

Certainly not my intention. I think he is one player who everybody wants to do well. On GWS form he could be anything and he wants to play for Freo and was prepared to sit out a year before doing so. A ripper bloke.
