Some I mprovement by Jones
Cox - best 19 year old key forward prospect in the competition
Luke Ryan is a star

Matera - I’m not sure what his strengths are but handballing isn’t one of them ... and neither is kicking or marking.
Cam Mac seems to be going backwards

Good assessment WTB, I think we often forget Cox is only 19. He and Darcy are both punching well above their weight. To be doing what they are doing now would have them acclaimed as the brightest stars in the game if they were playing in media favoured clubs. North is showing enough for me to be given a few more goes at it.

Had to laugh at Healy trying to say Freo had tooo many talls after Ryder went down. He was one of the great spouters of the truism "A good big player will always beat a good small player" a few years ago. It is not hard to work out why some of these clowns are working in the media and not coaching AFl.

Let me make an early call for the next game against Essendon:
Duman in for Nyhuis (suspended)
Bennell in for Matera (time's up) for me. Bennell bog for Peel.
Will McCarthy be retained?? Kersten?

Kersten, and Bennell in, not sure that Nyhuis should be suspended.

Eventually
Attended the game today and biggest observation was seeing how unfit or slow Matera really is. The guy had numerous opportunities to pick up loose balls and dash away and deliver or snap a goal and just couldnt get into a sprint - one below us near the 50 m line had everyone around us commenting and deploring how slow he was!
This guy needs to be dropped to Peel for the rest of the year and must find a few yards to ever play again for us.

na, he's just a little stumpy bloke who looks slow because he's a little stumpy bloke. Pity his skills weren't up to it. Put him on the fire and see how he moves.

Na, he’s slow. Big lumbering ruckman slow. What has saved him before is that he was quick of hand and foot when he had the ball. But not now so it is even more obvious how slow he is.

I’m not sure what they can do with Cam Mac. I can forgive a wasted season last year as he was coming back from a year off but he doesn’t look like an AFL player at the moment and we need more from him given the trade that was involved. As they say, you have to get the ball before you can use it, unfortunately even though Cam is a good user he can’t get the ball. He looks out of shape and slow (even before he copped a whack yesterday).

Yesterday a couple of experts were agreeing Matera hasn't been able to play his game. I watched Gold Coast and it was only the name Matera that got my attention not anything he did during the game. When Cam plays I feel we are a player down. Our policy of get back WA boys ain't working.

Well Mac, it has worked ok with Hill and Wilson, 50% ain't bad. Better than our win strike rate.

Hill has been carrying extra head weight since coming back and maybe with his ban he might grow up and realise he needs to do more. He had it easy with Hawthorn.
Wilson is a B plus.
Kersten Hit and miss.
Hamling is a B
Bennell ?

I would hate to see the minus side of things if we lost

Watch Hill closer next week, every time he stuffs a kick up, it is when he is trying to hurry a chip kick 15-20 meters, after gaining possession and running a line, and looking up to see empty space and no-one leading at him from 50-60 meters down the ground. At the Hawks he had the likes of Roughhead, Bruest, Gunston and the like leading from the goals towards him. The times he had a long option down the ground yesterday, there was nothing wrong with his kicking. Something that any good assistant coach should have noticed and pointed out by now.

Hamling is a direct like for like replacement for Johnno, and you are giving him a B-? I think he is the general of our backline, and the "read the play and mark it" type that Johnno was at his best when he had Ibbo and Spurr playing the loose man/cover defense role. Wilson/Cerra, Blakely (unfortunately cause he should be in the midfield) and Ryan are starting to fill the loose man role now and our backline is where we want it to be. We just need our forward line to be where we need it to be (see above re B Hill) and the top 4 is ours.

We are only two games out of the eight with no forwards.
Our forward structure is in the backline.
It is exciting when its bombed over the centre line and doesn't land in the hands of the opposition and the race is on.
