Hinkley did not have a plan B yesterday, and his unsuccessful plan A was very similar to our unsuccessful plan A/B/C/D. We did try plan E on occasions yesterday and that was a success while it lasted.

That was 2015 Freo, with younger blokes. All the effort was there, but so was the ugly, error ridden football that made 2015 an unwatchable Minor prem season. You know, when we had that team with the age and experience advantages...

Yes Drub it was certainly error ridden but it didnt strike me as our classic ugly footy. We played a positive attacking brand, starting with Hamling, Ryan, Hill and Wilson (albeit out of the backline) but I didnt see that negative, fearful, backwards looking style that personally drives me crazy. This was a positive step, when they get it right I think we need to acknowledge. No one says all our problems are over. Whilst I pulled the remaining hair out of my head, I thoroughly enjoyed this game, just like the Adelaide game.

Wowee's right, just watching Talking Footy and both Brown and The Duck saying good stuff about us. Makes a change. Brown saying Port didn't just lose when players injured, Freo had the wood on them and if hadn't kicked 0.7 would have had game wrapped up earlier. Carey then went on about all the young guns in the side and future looking good. He may have read Jezza's comments.


BTW on another topic, I know we rubbish Sutcliffe but I'd like to see him get another game or two, playing in his correct position, to see how he goes. We have noticed an improvement in T-bone apart from that kick! He did kick two from way out in Darwin just don't let him get too close to goal.

True, there was definitely a streaming forward approach, but it was poorly executed by young and old alike. That may improve when the youngsters can go the season distance, but we've not seen Freo improve skills in Lyon's tenure to address the execution.

And If, by reading between the lines, Mundy's talk about instinctive footy means Lyon let them go on with it, then that's more weight to the argument he's not doing anything worth his dough.

Rhufus, I think it was the wet slippery conditions - they weren't game to try and switch in case they messed up. Keep it simple stupid, is what Ross might have said to them. But of course we all know he's not smart enough to do that.

I agree, Drubbing, we did have more forward line structure at times, but still have too many players back behind the ball unnecessarily. If these players were where they should be we would not have to go backwards at all. The other downsides, were as mentioned our skills especially goalkicking (or should that be pointkicking?), and the continual error of all players going to the man with the footy and no-one covering the outside players. Port would barely have scored after 1/4 time if we had covered the seagulls. All of the above errors come from an over-defensive mind set drilled into players rather than a natural attack or defend as the situation demands.
