TOPIC: Anyone Else For The Backline?

I don't think that's right Hypen. In 2011 he kicked 13 goals and had more inside 50s than clearance 50s. He was a 'utility' used all over the ground. In 2010 he was mostly a forward.

Under Harvey he didn't make the top 10 of the Doig from 2009-2011. Lyon came in as coach and Jonno finished in the top 3 in very good teams in 2012 and 2013.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think almost all of the credit for that should go to Johnno. He's one of my favourites. All Lyon did was structure the backline to allow Johnson to play to his strengths.

But the narrative that all Lyon does is ruin careers by stopping people play their natural game is so tiresome. His coaching allowed Johnno to flourish in a defensive role that he hadn't locked down before Lyon arrived.

On balance, it seems he's better at getting the most out of defenders like Johnno, Ibbo, Duffield, Spurr etc than he is at getting results out of players like Tabs, Cox and McCarthy, but I don't think it's fair to suggest he's a serial ruiner of careers either.

I think people are just very angry with the coach and these are the places you go to with that anger.

The anger is most certainly justified.

seems to indicate he is affecting the careers of a third of our squad in a negative fashion, you could add Ballas, Mayne, Walters, Barlow, Crozier, Ryan, Wilson, McPharlin and a few more to that list negatively affected. And it is all because he does not coach an attacking game style. You cannot deny that fact. It is what those of us calling for change can see.

I get it Hypen, I’m disappointed too and would prefer Lyon wasn’t our coach. There are plenty of avenues for spleen-venting – it’s talkback radio’s sole purpose as I understand it – and Dockerland is a good forum for it too. But Dockerland also used to be a place for balance and nuance and gallows humour and even unfounded optimism.

The unfounded optimism seems to only reside in Jezza now, and other than a wildly popular pub review written by some handsome fellow with exceptional taste, the rest of Dockerland posts seem to be a bunch of misery-guts whinging about all and sundry but almost always blaming Lyon, including things that don’t seem to be rooted in reality. If you don’t consider Lyon to be the worst coach in history, you are cast as a Roly lover.

He’s done some good things and some bad things. That continues to be the case. I don’t think he does as many good things as is required with the group at this stage, but I still think he is someone who understands football deeply, and who cares about his players. No-one is the sum of the worst thing about them, in Lyon’s case our inability to score goals.

Anyway, I’m ranting now. I just miss the days when people invested time in looking for the silver lining, rather than focusing on blaming Lyon for the rain.

Morgan.... - its not "tiresome" ...its the absolute truth!!

He is stiffling the hell out of otherwise creative players with his lunatic, defunct ways...

Let 'em have their heads!

Just let 'em play...!

Morgan, on balance he gets more out defenders because - that's what he does. What other coach would have got a whole career out of a bloke with one fist as his skillset?

The idea he's ruining careers is the ticking clock. By the time we get rid of Lyon, assuming he goes in 2020, is Fyfe and Walters will be near 30. Brad Hill will be up there too

We still have too many 2nd and 3rd players we don't know the real potential of, because he was too busy playing Rolyball with an aging squad to play them regularly.

On balance, his bad stuff outweighs the good, and he offers nothing but platitudes and clichés as deflections.

Yeah...

we should really acknowledge the Fist of Zachary Dawson as sheer Lyon inspired genius.

An old joke I'm starting (just for Morgan) is that Freo really wanted Zac to help an injury prone Elvis, but Lyon came with the package.

The rumour at the time was that Goddard might follow Lyon. So, you know, things could have always been worse. Imagine trying to talk yourself into Goddard?

Being optimistically optimistic isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I’ve remained optimistic for 25+ years and in that time we’ve had worse duds than Roly. Also in that time we’ve had playing lists better than our current list. What has improved is our recruiting pre and post Lyon. Our last 2 losses were ugly and if Roly was the reason we lost, then that’s fine. There’s highs and lows to every season. In fact that’s just everything in life.
