TOPIC: Anyone Else For The Backline?

Is there any chance that we could send anyone else to play in the backline even though they were recruited to play in other positions?

Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Crozier, Blakely, Weller, Cerra were all recruited as midfielders and Kersten and McCarthy were recruited as forwards.

Seeing as we can never kick enough goals I think we need to recruit a full back and turn him into a key forward.
Although I think that is what we're trying with Cox.

All they have to do is run backward - or something ?

Can you imagine the Whiz - oops, easy enough mistake to make I guess - that is, The Wiz being sent down back because he is such a great forward and we need to get the ball forward?

The thinking behind such a suggestion is what's driving our club at the moment - mind boggling.

Is there any chance we could dial down the Lyon-makes-everyone-a-defender histrionics by a few percent. Sure, he’s giving a guy we got for a fourth round pick a trial down back because it’s not obvious to anyone except Shane that he’s good enough to be a forward in a good team.

Ballantyne has played his entire career as a small forward because at his best he was an elite small forward. Lyon loved him. Walters has played almost all of his career as a small forward because he’s an elite small forward. He’s played a bit in the midfield because he could be elite there as well (though not as damaging in my humble opinion). He never put Pavlich back. He’s never put Tabs back (although they’ve tried to use him as a second ruck). He never put D Pearce back, which I think was a mistake. He’s never put an elite midfielder like Fyfe, Mundy or Neale back. If anything, Lyon’s worst decision was playing Barlow forward.

The only people who go into the backline are people who can’t crack the team in their preferred position, like Sutcliffe or Crozier in years gone by, Mayne when he was horribly out of form, and Kersten now. It’s pretty standard coaching stuff. In fact I'm sure if you look back through Freo history you'll see plenty of times it has been successful. Tarrant and Roger are probably standouts.

There is no way Wiz would be sent to the backline. It’s just such a ridiculous statement. He was a gem, and you'd have to be an idiot not to recognise it. Lyon might lean too heavily on the defensive side of things, but he's not an idiot. There are all manner of reasons to criticise Lyon. I don’t understand the need to invent more.

I take your point. But if Farmer was playing today he would spend 50% back of centre as a small forward. Its what the game is doing and its what our coach knows. Possibly the only thing he knows. Which is everyone else's point.

Just to clarify, RL has played Tabs as a key defender on several occasions (generally for half a game), D Pearce spent many games rebounding off half back and Manic played plenty of games at half back before going to half forward now.

Everyone could tell RL the decision to play Barlow, a slow clearance machine with great hands and a fast mind under pressure was not a pressure forward (these players require speed to close the gap and apply tackles etc). Sending Barlow to that graveyard was a mistake.

Crozier is the one that worked out well but for unknown reasons, RL almost immediately decided it was a mistake despite Crozier instantly being our best disposer off half back, a great rebounding mark and aerial threat as well as the fastest bloke down back to shut down a small and then rebound.

I don't think it was a genuine point that Farmer would be a small defender, more that our current small forwards are situated too close to defence under the current game plan.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

There was a time when small forwards never left the 50m. It was long before Jeff was playing. He was most dangerous close to goal, but he spent a fair bit of time in the middle of the ground and occasionally in defence chasing kicks, especially when he and Medhurst were in the same team.

Flooding as a tactic started in the mid-90's. It's not a recent thing.

As for putting people back, the one player people forget about is Johnno. He was tried in a number of roles, mostly forward, until Lyon plonked him in the backline where he developed into an AA calibre defender.

If you take off your ‘Ross Lyon is ruining the game’ blinkers off for long enough you’ll see Buddy Franklin playing behind the footy as well. It happens in every game every week and starts with who wins the centre clearance.

Pretty sure Johnson was our premier backman in 2011, Morgan.

I think, Morgan, saying that Farmer would spend most of his time in the backline under Lyon, is a hyperbolic way of saying that Lyon has no idea how to coach a forward line. All the players you have mentioned are required to push deep into the defense at the very time of the game that we require them to be targets up forward; ie when we gain possession of the footy. This is why our clearance wins (and turnovers) are so high, yet our inside 50's are so low.

Has the world gone mad?

Johnson, premier backman?

Elvis just turned in his grave. Actually, he swayed a little before doing that hip shimmy thing and then took a glorious hang for the hell of it but you take my point. I hope.
