...why White Pointer Walters got a week off for a punch in the guts.
"Jordan Lewis, Melbourne, has been charged with striking Michael Walters, Fremantle, during the third quarter of the Round 16 match between Melbourne and Fremantle, played at TIO Stadium on Saturday July 7, 2018.

In summary, he can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence and a medical report from the Fremantle Football Club, the incident was classified as intentional conduct with low impact to the body."

Walters' hit was classified as medium impact.

I don't want to cast dispersions on Jordan Lewis but I reckon when Walters hits you you stay hit.

Well, a person should always be prepared to admit they were wrong....and I admit I was wrong.

I actually thought having these issues graded by a single individual would result in greater consistency in decision making. Michael Christian has proven that idea to be flawed.

Christian can't even agree with himself from week to week. This is the same bloke that assessed Taylor Walker's brushed fingers as low impact and a week later, a full on punch that left a player needing attention is assessed as identical. You could say equating the two is absurd but that would be overly generous in my view

I think he is proving that incompetence is caused by the water in AFL House or the aircon or those long boozy lunches with Kim Jong Gil. Maybe he should try and find a job he is good at because judgment isn't his forte.

I think they've got this one right. Sonny threw a punch into the sternum and it has some force behind it. If we are referring to the elbow as Sonny ran past the mark, it wasn't as forceful IMO. That's the problem with these cases, there is not right and wrong, it's a spectrum and we all see things differently.

There were two others similar circumstances only revived fines on the weekend. I struggle to differentiate between all of the incidents.

The Higgins incidents were exactly the same as Sonny yet treated completely differently. Higgins pretended to be hurt from a light tummy tap and went down just like the Crow yet both the Suns players escaped with a low grading.

No one has seen the medical report from the Crows but unless he somehow had bruised/broken ribs from the Sonny incident in which case he should probably take up a non-contact sport, there's absolutely no way Sonny's hit should have been medium contact and we should have challenged the outrageous decision.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Michael Christians comment on the May/Higgins incident

"Visually, it looked harder and it looked more forceful," Christian said.
"Jake Kelly was certainly more impeded by what had happened. We also take into account the medical report.
"Across those three areas, in terms of grading impact, it certainly came out as medium in that particular case, as opposed to the Steven May case, which we believe fitted comfortably in the low impact range."

AFL reporter Riley Beveridge's take on the incident

GOLD Coast co-captain Steven May has been given a reprieve after he was fined $2000 for a heavy strike to the midriff of star North Melbourne midfielder Shaun Higgins on Sunda
y.

I don't think the Lewis hit on Walters is comparable, but Lewis , with his record was very lucky not to get a week. However the May hit and Walters hit that resulted in a 1 week suspension were identical as you could get, and only a bias by the MRP and AFL could see 1 player getting suspended and another getting a fine for the same offence.

Will we. wont we?

Tough finish to the game for Coburg, but I thought to myself "the rules are the rules". However further down the article comes this quote:

Under AFL laws, if a field umpire is under the impression that any player or official from the opposing side enters the protected area, except when a player is accompanying or following within two metres of an opponent, they can pay a free kick and award a 50m penalty.

I wonder when the interpretation of can rather than must will be used to deny Freo a 50 mt penalty and certain goal in a close game?

Journalistic licence.

The Law says "shall" not "can"

Actually I think honesty rather than sloppy reporting. The journalist has probably watched enough AFL to know that just because the rule says you have to award a free kick, that doesn't mean you have to.

Fair enough, I should know better than to trust a journalist to get it right. There is still a world of difference between shall and must though.
