Jones from Melbourne, Phil Davis from GWS and Dangerfield were on the show 'On the Couch' last night discussing the state of the game. From watching it, I was left with the opinion that every side has the same defensive game plan but Richmond just do it better than everyone else. They also said that more work goes into forwards playing defensively than actually kicking goals. Goal kicking is so bad because players are stuffed. Coaches and assistants minutely go over every aspect of the game but I got the impression that again it was heavily concentrated on studying and negating the opposition players more than working on an attacking game plan. Jones, Dangerfield and Davis all agreed that the game needed to change to make it a better more free flowing game.
I don't think Lyon has moved on from his coaching philosophy of 2013 but I think that it's still the style that most teams are playing and Richmond are by far the best at it mainly because they have big strong midfielders who can run all day, super quick small forwards and a good defense.
