I know people will jump on Watters about his coaching at St Kilda but I can't find much to disagree with there.

Morgs' post will start something like "Gee a couple of big names there", but that doesn't make them wrong. The point about someone being able to challenge Ross is also valid.

Sumich was at WC for years with worsfold. Lasted 5 minutes with Lyon.

Lyon won't change. He's made some moves to doing so, but always falls back on his security blanket of numbers behind the ball. He still thinks this defensive set up helps you contain a game.

How often do they get smashed playing that crap, like yesterday. We'd have done barely more with Fyfe and 211 in the game. He's a gold plated idiot.

Playing that way in Darwin, that heat. A group of young kids - it's crazy.

I'd like to see succession planning, the appointment of our next coach. This person can start challenging Ross from day one and take over a few years down the track.

That last bit scares me Hypen. If we have identified our next coach, he takes over now. Get rid of the dead wood off field, now that we have cleaned out the on-field.

Just read the article, and it gives me confidence that the critics of Lyon on Dockerland are not just aggrieved supporters on a vendetta. Watters and Cummings say exactly what some of us here have been saying for a while now. Do they regularly log on here? If so, who are they? or did they somehow come up with this critique of their own volition?

The only person that doesn't know what is going on is our coach !

That is quite sad for us .

Good points about the team we sent out on Friday being one of our better teams. Fyfe yes , but gee we miss Sandi.
It appears ross has placed his whole game plan on Sandi ‘s tap dominance to at least break even around the contest.
We are in for a lot of hurt and I would rank the loss against Melbourne as one of our worst statistically.
Ie or 28 forward entries against 78 for Melbourne has to be one of the worst.

We won games earlier in the season while losing the clearances, and got thrashed while winning the clearances. Having Sandi out of the team is not the reason why we lost on Saturday night, nor was having Fyfe out.

A change to the structure in Darwin would have not made one ounce of difference. Melbourne were walking the ball lout of the centre and dominating contested possession. We were also being monstered in marking contests. It’s human nature that all our players would be running into defence to help out. The best thing with Fyfe being out against Adelaide was that Blakely moved to the midfield and showed how important he is in there. He is also a huge out.
The show with Cummings and Watters is dreadful. They look totally unprepared.

The reason Melbourne were walking the ball out of the centre was because we were hesitant at the ball, knowing we had nothing on offer forward. Melbourne didn't just "monster the marking contests" they got us on the ground when we were forced to play around with the footy across half back due to there being no-one forward. We recruited Wilson for his running from the backline, and long accurate kick, which gives him the ability to break 2 lines of defence in the 1 play. Then we take away the target he is looking for. Ditto S Hill. Ditto L Ryan.

What is the point in making Cox the option across half - back if you want him to be the option forward? Apeness and Cox, both leading at the footy, with Balla's, Cerra, Langdon and Tucker crumbing would force any side to change their defensive pattern. Did we try it ? NO. Opposition sides know that when they get the footy backwards of the center and under pressure, against us, they can steady, kick across or back to a teammate who is free because all our forwards are rushing back to guard space on the defensive side of the centre. Then they kick to unguarded players down the ground who have identified the space we don't want to guard.

Opposition players regularly mark the ball 5-10 mters in the clear because Freo players are (I presume) told to guard zones, not to play man on man. That only works if there is pressure on the player kicking the ball. As noted above, we don't have players doing that because they are rushing back to defend zones. And are being exhausted in the process.

You may or may not remember after a disappointing loss last year, Ross saying “yeah, it’s disappointing but we take the learnings and move on.”

Whatever “the learnings” actually means, hands up if you can see that they’ve been taken?

Or were they left behind in a single-use plastic bag some where?

It’s an atrocious state of affairs. A metre or two of execution or timing may be the difference between your top class and middle class players but the ideas and the attempted execution should not have such a gap that it becomes invisible. It’s been invisible to me no matter who was on the park since two years befor Pavlich retired.

We can't just throw the forward line up around the ball cause they are not that good at the moment. That's not how you play long term and not what they should be taught now. Another thing, they are so disorganized all those extra numbers are wasted.

I lived up in Darwin for a time, played and umpired - at a very low level. It is so oppressive playing sport up there in the wet or dry. It was astonishing how hard we made it for them.

He has to change. You can still support the coach and recognize this fact.
