CA, the biggest problem we have is this myth of rebuilding that Lyon has sold to the club board. We have a mix of players that should have been challenging for a top 4 spot over the last 2 years. A mix of injuries (caused by a game plan that requires overworking on the ground and the training track?), a very limited game plan (the same tactics used against every side in the comp, regardless of their strengths and weaknesses), and a refusal by the head coach to play players in the role that they stood out in before being selected for the Freo squad.
I believe a change in coaching philosophy would result in a very quick rise to the top of the comp. We have seen in rare halves of footy that when players are allowed to take the game on, and play a conventional structure, we score goals. To hear the commentators continually say last night that the Freo mids and backs had to hold the ball up because they had no options forward was an indictment on everyone off-field who is accepting this mess. Walters will probably be dropped next week for his 2 torps into the forward line from back of the center, but it showed the frustration he is feeling. Melbourne also identified him as the danger man running into the vacant forward line, early in the game and got away with continual blocking and holding on him when he did try to burst forward.
