One of my favourite players to watch, he will be sorely missed...

Think Bruce McAvaney will be crying himself to sleep for the next month...

More to life than footy - we could all do well to remember that.
Loved watching Cyril at his best carving up the opposition.

Good luck to him and thanks for the memories.

Sad news for the game itself. A brilliant footballer, the spectacle of the game owes a great deal to him and I will miss him immensely.

There are few opposition players you love. He's one.

All the best to you Cyril - A Rioli will always be close to many Freo supporters heart.
Personally I was petrified when Cyril had the ball or it was in his area - I recall Antoni Grovers worried look when left one out with Cyril in a game a few years ago.
Not to mention the T Train either.
I recall in the 2010 final he came in under an injury cloud and left the game early.
That was one of the main factors to us winning that game..
Congratulations on a great career

Salute to an exceptional player.
In that item that Mercury posted, there is an extended 'Game Breaker' clip of Rioli's effort in the 2015 Grand Final (Norm Smith Medal for the game). Apart from his 'never give up' commitment and sublime skills, I'm trying to think why it is that it is such an entertaining clip. Maybe because the Hawks had the Toast for breakfast, lunch and dinner that day and won by 46 points. [Won't mention the fact that FFC were minor premiers that year and went out to Hawks in the PF ... oh well]
Best wishes Cyril — thanks for entertaining us.

He was a terrific player who had a massive impact on the sport. We all saw him do ridiculous stuff on the field, but in many ways my favourtie anecdote was that although he won his third Premiership in the 2014 Grand Final, he only managed 12 games that year (after 15 in 2013), owing to persistent hamstring issues. An ordinary person having won a third Premiership would have been excused for enjoying the break and returning to the game on their own terms, but instead as I understand it Cyril Rioli spent the 2015 pre-season working hard with Hawthorn's strength and conditioning staff to re-learn how to run. Imagine that for one second - not learning how to kick better, or run faster, but how to do one of the most natural activities differently. I don't reckon that would have been easy. Anyhow, on the back of that effort he played 24 matches in 2015 (his best effort since debuting in 2008), won his fourth Premiership, and won the Norm Smith Medal to boot. In my view that's nothing short of incredible.

Cyril Rioli was a supremely gifted footballer, no question - but his status as one of the all-time greats came about just as much through his incredibly hard work. What a champion!

Every cloud has a silver lining but in this case the price to pay for never having to hear Bruce McAvaney drool ‘delicious’ and ‘special’ in the commentary box again is too significant.

Super player.

People have summed up Cyril very well here. On the one hand, I recall with absolute clarity the panic I felt when Mzungu passed the ball to Tommy S in the 2015 prelim and how Cyril pounced on the dropped mark. Basically killed off our chances in that game. Then, in the 2015 GF against the Weagles, he kicked an effortless goal in the first quarter and after that, I relaxed and realised that the Hawks would beat the Weagles that day. Good on you Cyril!

Pulling the pin on his own terms just adds to the sense of the quality of this man. Putting life ahead of footy is a rare trait amongst elite players.

Great, great player....but any chance we could send someone up there coax him down for a couple of years to sit in a forward pocket??

On one leg , I would have him.!

Then again, RoLy would turn him into a backman, ban him from marking, and force him to kick down the line, and eliminate all Rioli creativity from him.

So, no, leave him up there and we’ll continue to enjoy the memories of this ‘Great’’.
