Graham Polak once got hit by a tram and still didn't drop the footy he'd just marked.

You're all wrong, Steven Koops was the best mark Freo have had. Three speccies a week minimum.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

+1 on Polak. Could mark a footy from anywhere. Just took too long once he had it if he was out of range

I ended up working with Polly (Polak). I'd been away for weeks on holiday and had no idea he'd arrived onsite. Went to tag on at the underground tag board and there's his mug on a tag just hanging there in the breeze.

He's an awesome bloke. That tram had no idea.

Agree, we should have never of let Polak go to Richmond , he was a KP player who could actually take a contested grab (admit his kicking let him down)
Sam Collins is twice the player Jones is or will be and another we should have kept, granted a bit slow if his opponent had a fast lead but showed great character and a team player who gave 100% , another Thunder B& F winner who was let go (along with Matt Deboer)
You need to keep players like that as they are the heart & soul of the club ( thank the stars they got back Tendai and maybe Mikey Barlow would make a great assistant coach next year)

OGS, do you not wonder if there was a reason why he played enough games to win a F & B at Peel?

I always thought JLo was our best mark, Matt Carr was good too.

All this talk around Jones, I seemed to have missed something somewhere. Clearly his instructions were to get himself up on the boundary somewhere and then just bring the ball to ground. That's it - and he did it over and over and over again. I bet he was told to not even try and mark the long ball forward, just bring it to ground. And he did - then got pooped out in the third quarter and couldn't make it to the contest. Then he just stood there, bumped off anyone he could and batted the ball to his feet.

Hang on a minute...hang on!!?? -..."Guess you are on the young side " ??!!!! ...HA!!!
If you are ranking "good marking players" by the fact that they once or twice took a speccy grab ...well...you are dreamers!!
Presumably, being AFL players, one would expect them to take a grab now and then, and yep, since inception we have had a fair few blokes who have proven 'they have taken a grab.'
But a "good mark" - obviously in my view - is a fella who in any condition, under any pressure, under any match situation, can be relied upon to complete the task at a high percentage rate of success.
And, yep, Fyfe, Hasleby, Pav and Mcpharlin -in my view - are the only blokes, since inception, that meet that criteria. They all "played tall'...and you all know what that means.
Yep, maybe Ive been a bit harsh on Polak -(a courageous, going back in the pack mark ) Fletch (a player I really respected and yep, played tall), and I'd say the other would be Modra. Yep, I'll accept Mundy can take a grab.
But, the rest Clive, Koops, Mann, Chisolm Crozier(????)and anyone else mentioned Wills(???) were all just as likely to drop them as they were to clunk them! Abilty to take a speccy? - Yes. Good reliable clunkers? - No.

And my point was, throughout our history, we have struggled to find blokes who can "clunk 'em", which is why -in my view- Ive paid a lot of interest in Tabs' development ...ie been so frustrated, but also so pleased to see him start "clunking 'em".

As a club, we've struggled to have blokes that have had strong hands, and, quite obviously, that can be measured and quantified by our complete lack of dominant KPP's who - are generally - pretty sound marks.
Yep, Pav, and Mcpharlin fit that bill, Fyfe could and probably will eventually, but we have a need for him to be everywhere else at the moment and, in the near future. Yep, Hasleby was no KPP, but geez he had strong hands. He was a great, solid and reliable mark for a midfielder & man his size.

I'd also put this hypothesis to the masses to consider:
"Blokes with 'strong hands' are like gold - They dont get traded. "

The 4 I mentioned , obviously played out their carreer at Freo, the others mentioned clearly did not.

Yep, undoubtedly, we have had blokes capable of taking great marks ( The Wiz, Winny, Dhurkay and Walters, and maybe Ballas are amongst that lot ) , but we've had very few are "genuine clunkers"...

Jones has only played eight quarters of afl footy and looked better in every one. It’s all you can ask for.

Ibbotson regularly stood in the hole and marked under immense physical pressure, outmarked taller opponents 1 on 1, and got into position to take uncontested marks. I don't know what else he has to do to qualify as a better than good average mark. There are a few more in that category as well, Clement, McPhee, Walker.

Yep Ibbo was a 'good' mark, and i did think about him RM. He definitely showed courage going back into packs. Definitely a good mark....but...maybe it was towards the end, maybe not, but he had his fair share of clangers as well. Good mark but not "great".
Id rate the 4 mentioned as 'great".
Walker and Mcphee -nup, cant agree. Mcphee definitely had a lot "bouncing off the chest" as I recall...
My measure is not "better than average" ....they have to be "great".
We've had very few "greats"...

By your measure, we measure up to the rest of the comp on a pro rata basis, especially if you take the paid/not paid clangers into the equation.

Raglan do you think that might be because Roly doesnt know a footballer from a netballer hence one of the reasons behind our current demise
Flabagasted Jones is named again as an emergency
Any doubters about his abilities please go to Friday`s night V subi and let me know (me thinks Clarke will make him second rate)
