I think the crowd also has an influence on some marginal calls. Recall some of the tackles NicNat made that were close to a report, but in real time paid as holding the ball (like the one against Sydney that was a clear push in the back). I think umpires get caught up in that sometimes.

But I think these examples are at the margins. For the most part, I think blokes like Shuey and Gaff go in low, get lower on the tackle, then throw themselves to the ground while shrugging their shoulders. Tony MacLean from the Bulldogs does the same thing. The way they play they are just going to get more free kicks, and I don’t think it has to do with the umpires at all. The umps are put in a difficult position, and they are forced to pay more frees.

But I think there may be real issues with Margetts and Dalgleish. Way too many of the marginal calls go with West Coast over too long a period of time.

The inevitable royal commission should also factor in the free kicks against that aren't paid. Just as damning.

I played cricket in Canada once. Also took someone down in a snowball fight. He figured as I didn't know anything about baseball I probably couldn't throw. Showed that sucker! If you pack snow hard enough it becomes an iceblock.
Ahhhh, good times...

True, Polly. You can prepare a surprisingly good cricket pitch with a zamboni.

These players you mention Morgan haven't been playing for 15 years and there players aren't the same type to influence this many divisions .

Well I guess at least for this year WC won't get the bonus of Margetts and Dalgleish for their home derby.

It's also where on the ground they get their frees, often in front of goals, and at the time of the game - where it's there to be won, like against us in Derby 1, 2018, while frees down the other end to the other team are often not paid, and when they are, it's usually after the game is over, to even things up.

A mate of mine at the western end of Optus said that Margetts, after paying a free against Hurn in the first derby, a few minutes later and in full view of the crowd, ran up to Hurn, patted him on the arse and whispered something in his ear. Wish someone caught that on camera.

Don't be too quick, rr.

The AFL insisted that WA umps had no impact on games and appointed Margetts and Dalgliesh to the Essendon game and look how that turned out.

The AFL are still writing off their conduct as 'noise of affirmation' even though it only applies to the toasters and no other side.

From what I can see, the AFL seems determined to justify making no changes....because everything is all above board, right?

Yeah, nah. The Eagles win the free kicks everywhere with all umpires. Those umpires just umpire them more.

They're very good at drawing free kicks. They exploit the fact that, in the name of consistency, the umpires are given very little leeway to account for the spirit of the game.

I don't think so Shane. When they played Sydney in Sydney I watched the first quarter and saw 4 decisions that they would have got in a WA game. Had they got those decisions they would have gone into quarter time with a handy lead. When it comes to winning the free kick count, Sydney are their nemesis.

And when it comes to 50m penalties, there is nothing, no matter how insignificant, that doesn't get them a 50m at home. I mean, what was going on when Margetts failed to pay shepherding in the marking contest against NN, McGovern marks, and then as Hooker runs off after arguing the toss, he pings him for running through the protected zone.

The AFL are in a deliciously tricky spot here, yet again... no doubt they'll slide their way out of it, but

i) They maintain the umpires are beyond reproach and will not suffer criticsm of them at all, ,to the extent that even the proud, independent media industry that follow the game avoid going there due to lack of spine, and

ii) we now have proof that the umpires aren't perfect sunbronzed gods of impartiality and should be questioned.

If the AFL had a scrap of integrity their collective heads would have exploded over this by now.

Investigation just in the area of free kick count is a start.
Questions should start with the supporters who should be asked why they yell BALL! continually for four quarters no matter what is happening on the field.
