Shane is pretty much on the money. Nat is a very accomplished and thoughtful young man, no doubt about that. But as a cheerfully cynical middle-aged bloke I find his earnestness and self-assuredness disconcerting. Perhaps that is just youth or a generational thing, but Nat delivers everything as if it’s the most insightful comment ever uttered, when in fact I’m not sure I’ve ever heard him say anything that I’ve personally found insightful or even interesting.
In the same way I would look back at myself in my mid-20s and roll my eyes, I just reckon Nat comes off like a bit of a flog. His choice of attire, the Adidas ad where he saunters out of the surf, the insufferable workout videos from LA, the smart-guy glasses he wore when he was teaching Zac Clarke how to ruck at halftime in a game when he was injured, the way he describes himself as an ‘introvert who can be an augmented extrovert’ probably just rubs me up the wrong way.
But these are relatively minor things that probably only bother cynical old blokes like me.
There’s a great little song by Chris Wood called a Whole Life Lived, about an old bloke stuck sitting next to a young bloke at the pub. It basically sums up how I feel when I listen to Nat Fyfe talk.
So I don’t listen to him talk. I pay my money and watch him perform amazing feats on the footy field, hope to never get stuck sitting next to him at the pub, and know that although he might be a bit of a flog, I’m enormously grateful that he’s our flog.

If they spent more time practising their goalkicking, and less practising their media skills, they would come across as "less of a flog" but more of a winner. Something to think about.
No matter how good a person you are, how good an athlete you are, or however totally woke you are at being awesome, if you are raised in a corporate culture - you gonna be a flog. Corporate culture is flog culture.
When I read the term, “augmented extrovert” in a media piece about the Fyfe episode, I decided not to watch. What good can possibly come from this self-help-book-bollocks-speak culture? I know it’s just sport, but really.
Sure he is a Flog but he’s our Flog. Actually we are fortunate as there are various types of Flog. For example, some teams have Free Radical Flogs who, like free radicals in our bodies, cause enormous harm. They go swimming in rivers late at night, bust up taxis and set things alight.
Now, while I have your attention, did you realise that a normal team has an equal number of Flogs and Anti Flogs? I am not good at spotting Anti Flogs but I suspect Wilson and Ryan could possibly be Anti Flogs. The key characteristics of Anti Flogs is that they are simple, direct and do not spout unearned wisdom. And they laugh a lot.
I have more but probably best not to encourage me.
